Thank you again, without lovely subscribers I would just be a shallow beauty-addict talking to myself :)

LUSH: bargain alert

Over Christmas I have spent quite a lot of time catching up on some of my favorite blogs and discovering new ones. Along the way I discovered quite a trend of fellow bloggers loving LUSH, which of course meant that I now needed to check it out (darn peer pressure).

So today, I went into Cambridge to check out the sales and of course made a stop at Lush. This isn't my first time shopping there, but it is the first in a very long time. Actually, technically that's not true - I did buy a few bits there pre-Xmas when I somehow got roped into doing my boyfriends Xmas shopping for his Mum and Sister in law. For them I picked up two gift boxes, the 'Happy' one and the 'Blossom' one, plus a sample of Big shampoo for myself.

The sample of Big was enough to last about 2 or 3 washes and from the first wash I new I liked it - the lather is amazing, but with a really unusual bitty texture (because of the sea salt). The result was squeaky clean hair that has more volume than I have ever had or seen in my hair - and that was without any styling products or even back combing... so anyway, I was sold - and wanted to go back for the full size.

Which I did today, as I said. I had in mind the Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter too, but when I got to the shop I found they were out of stock of that and Big - the delivery lorry was robbed on Xmas eve! I'll bet the thieves made a clean getaway with all that soap.... sorry, lame joke.

But when I saw the Sale they had going I had to get a few bits - when you spend over £20 you get either a mystery bag of products worth at least £20 or one of the Xmas gift sets (or a product of your choice) for free. What a bargain.

I went for 'what's in the mystery bag' option - and got a selection of Xmas goodies, including the delicious candy cane bubble bar plus some bath ballistics and other lovely bits. I won't do the full list as I haven't used any of them yet - but when I do, I'll do a full review - but in the meantime, get yourself down to Lush and grab yourself a bargain.

December 2009 In and Out

I love reading in and out posts on other blogs, so thought I would jump on the band wagon and do one of my own. I might make these a bit of a regular feature on the blog.

IN

Painting my Nails

Currently obsessed with keeping my nails nicely manicured. I am so indecisive though that I am changing colour every couple of days - before there is any chipping or tip wear. Currently wearing my Nubar Raspberry Truffle that I applied on Christmas Eve - gorgeous deep berry with a pretty glitter/shimmer.

Lookbook.nu

Nothing new here, but I love browsing this site for style inspiration and generally to fuel my hair-envy at all these people with wonderful long 'Serena Vanderwoodsen' style hair. Why wont my hair ever reach those wonderful lengths and thickness?? (I get closer to calling the hairdressers and booking extensions day by day).

Blusher

Loving wearing blusher for pretty much the first time in my life. I have naturally pale/pinky skin and I blush far too easily so normally skip blush as I have enough of my own. But on Xmas eve I got my hands on my new MAC blush in Well Dressed that I got my parents to buy (with my money) at the airport for me in November and I love it. Such a pretty pink - will do a full review shortly. This isn't my only blusher I am loving, just the latest one - but I am converted to how blusher can lift a face, even a naturally pink one like mine.

OUT

Dry Skin

I have a horrid post-cold issue with dry skin around my nose. I have been applying Johnson's Baby Moisturising Cream, which has helped, but will still take some time to heal properly and till then, applying foundation is a pain as it is going to look all gross and crusty. Nice.

Fake Tan

I do love a bit of a glow, but I just don't have the time or inclination to keep up my usual St Tropez routine. Plus in my new flat I have lovely bright white bed sheets - and night time tanning doesn't really work with white sheets. I'm going to try to find a new tanner that is tint-free so I can do it without having to change sheets every other day (or leave them with slightly dodgy looking stains).

Eating

I never thought I would say this, but I think I'm done with eating for the foreseeable future. Not in the scary eating-disorder way, but in the way that I have eating so much, seemingly constantly for the past few days that I just want to stop! Now, as a big food person (I live to eat - as my waistline can testify to) this is shocking - I would even turn down cheese topped garlic bread from Pizza Express right now. Yep, that's how full I am.

Korres Lip Butter: Review

I got a bit of a bargain recently when I bought a Korres Guava Lip Butter in one of the lovely Cosmetic Candy's blog sales for only £3.00. It was brand new and totally untouched and came in a fabulous package along with the other bits I bought plus a lollipop (kept the boyfriend happy and distracted him from the fact I had bought more make-up) and best of all - a cosmetic candy badge. Yep, like a Blue Peter badge but for grown ups (who have an obsession with make-up).

Anyway, onto the review. It took me a while to use this lip butter for the first time as it looked all smooth and lovely and I didn't want to 'spoil' it by sticking my grubby mitts in (no, there's no logic there at all) I guess I can only liken it to when it snows and everything looks and perfect and white - till a big car comes along and spoils it by turning it to sludge. Kinda similar...

Anyway, when I got 'stuck in' I found a rather different texture to what I was expecting. I was expecting something similar to a standard lip balm, but instead found that the lip butter was thicker - although it wasn't heavy or thick when applied on the lips. It was just quite dense and creamy rather than balm-like. When applied it feels creamy and really moisturises, rather than just coats lips a-la Vaseline. I find that using this keeps my lips soft all day with just a couple of applications.

My favorite things about the lip butter are the smell and the colour. The colour is creamy-white, and as it is tinted it acts as a sort of concealer for my natural lip colour - leaving me with pale/neutral lips - which is a look I love, especially since I tend to focus my make-up on my eyes. The smell is gorgeous - fruity and sweet, and reminds me of cocktails. Yummy.

The picture above was taken pre-use (so I can savour the smooth and perfect loveliness).

My Beauty New Years Resolutions

So, Christmas is over and 2010 is just around the corner I thought it would be a good time to think about my new year resolutions (beauty-wise, of course).

1. Sort out my cuticles

I have a nightmare with my cuticles. This is mostly my own fault as I have a bit of a habit of picking at them (gross, I know). This year I plan to look after them and get them into a much better condition by the end of the year.

2. Be a bit more 'polished'

This covers a few things, including getting (or giving myself) regular manicures and pedicures plus being a bit more regular with my fake-tanning - to avoid my weekly tan/pale/tan/pale routine. Using a gradual tanner every other day is the way forward.

3. Look after my hair

This mainly boils down to not going longer than 8 weeks without a haircut (or at least a trim). I also want to do a weekly deep conditioning treatment plus never use heat on my hair without a protecting product.

I was going to add in a resolution to not buy stuff that I don't need, but then I didn't want to be ridiculous..... so instead I thought I would throw in a couple that aren't beauty-related:

4. Buy more classic clothes rather than trends

I had a huge wardrobe clear-out this year and have got rid of anything that I never wear. Some of this includes stuff I haven't really worn and even some bits that I love but just doesn't suit or flatter me. So I was ruthless and got rid of loads of stuff, donating it to charity shops after giving my friends first dibs on some stuff. I plan to continue keeping my wardrobe a bit more streamlined this year, by only buying classic, decent quality items rather than cheap trends.

5. Exercise more

I'm no gym bunny (understatement) but plan to incorporate some exercise into my life this year.

Just a thought...

Something I have been pondering since I had my hair done is the difference between high-end and drugstore shampoo/conditioners and if it is really worth forking out the extra cash for the salon brands over the cheap and cheerful.

At my salon appointment at Rush I decided to buy a Kerastase Biotic Bain Bio Recharge Shampoo (for Combination Hair) as it was recommended to help treat my sensitive scalp - a problem I whinge about all too often on this blog.

I am really disappointed to report though, that since using the shampoo for just under two weeks, it seems to have made my scalp worse than ever and really irritated it. So I have stopped using it - which is a real shame when I forked out around £14 for the bottle.

This is what led me to wonder - what is the problem with using drugstore shampoo/conditioners? According to my hair dresser all they do is strip hair and then coat it with silicone to make it soft and shiny, which doesn't sound good. But then, on second thoughts - if I am left with hair that is clean, soft and shiny then what is the problem? The whole point is so it's clean and looks good, then why does it matter if *technically* it's not great for my hair?

In terms of hair I think I am more about the results rather than the method used to get there person. Anyone a high-end devotee? Or happy on the cheap end? Currently I am still using the Cheryl L'Oreal Shampoo and Conditioner alternated with Herbal Essences (shampoo for normal hair, with the lightweight conditioner). Share your thoughts below!

Post Clinique test skin care routine

Following on from my recent Clinique skin care review (read it HERE) I thought I would do a follow-on post about how I have adapted my skin care routine based on what I liked and didn't like about the Clinique products I tested out plus the old-faithfuls I have brought back into the fold.

To make it simple I have broken my routine down into remove make-up, cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise.

Remove Make-Up:

I have added in an oil cleanser to remove stubborn make-up, currently using the last bits of my DHC Cleansing Oil, which I love. It does a fantastic job shifting all make-up, including stubborn eye-make up and mascara.

I am still using my old-faithful No7 Eye Make-up remover, which is almost out so will be then moving on to trialing an alternative product I have been sent... the name will be revealed when I have reviewed it.

Cleanse:

I am sticking with the three step programme here, using the liquid cleanser in the evening, followed by the clarifying lotion. I mistakenly described this as a toner in my last review, when in actual fact it is a further cleansing/gentle exfoliating step. It does in many ways 'feel' like a toner, in the way that it is used (liquid on a cotton pad, wiped over the face) and that it is refreshing, but the effect is more than a simple toner. I have moved to using this one in the morning (without the liquid cleanser) for a quick freshen-up/cleanse post-shower, before make-up.

Exfoliate:

As I am using the Clarifying Lotion twice daily I am using the Clinique 7-day cleanser around 2/3 times a week for an extra exfoliating boost. My skin really needs this at this time of year, especially with the sudden cold spell - helps shift any dry, flaky skin and keep it glowing.

Moisturise:

I am still using the Dramatically Different Moisturiser twice a day, with the Moisture Surge as an added boost in the day and the Super Rescue Anti-oxidant Night Cream at night. I find this combination is working a treat. I have stopped using the Super Defence SPF 25 as the texture doesn't work for me. I'm also still using the All About Eyes Rich cream daily for the eye area, I have also returned to using Rodial Glam Balm at night, for an extra over-night boost (under eyes and to soften lips).

I do need to add a new day-time SPF moisturiser to my routine, so any suggestions are welcome. I could also do with finding something that is good for the occasional spot. I love that I haven't had a *single* break-out since I started using the Clinique (hence sticking with it) but would like to be prepared for the odd spot that will inevitably appear.

SPF and spot-vanishing suggestions below please!

Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara: Review

I love mascara, and I mean REALLY love mascara. It is without a doubt my desert-island beauty must-have and something I would only consider leaving the house without in a very unusual circumstance.

Mascara is one of the first make-up items I started playing with - the first was The Body Shop Clear Mascara - in hindsight, a very pointless item, but still a good start of life as a lash obsessive.

I received a new mascara in a (very fabulous) good bag at an event I recently went to and having used it for a few weeks I have concluded that it is definitely rave-worthy. The brush is some sort of miracle worker in my opinion, a comb applicator (normally not my favorite sort of applicator) this one is somehow different - it is fat, with really small, fine comb 'prongs'. The formula is smooth, doesn't clump, dries quickly and doesn't flake after a day long of wear.

I think the result is really amazing, it delivers super long lashes that somehow still stay looking natural after as many coats as you like. I am wearing the mascara today in a super-natural look, with just two coats on the upper lashes teamed with some under-eye concealer and a dusting of MAC MSF Natural (light) with a tiny bit of MAC MSF Perfect topping on the cheek bones.

Anyway, enough of my wittering on. Check out the pictures below to see what I mean about the mascara. The first picture shows one eye with no mascara and the other (on the right on the screen) is one coat of the Max Factor Mascara. The second, larger picture is a close up of two coats.

Left: No Mascara. Right: One Coat Max Factor False Lash Effect.

Two Coats of Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara.

Overall verdict? Love this mascara, perhaps it looks more impressive-natural than false-lash, but either way I love it and will be using this one and would be happy to re-purchase.

Oh baby, it's cold outside.... so stay in and moisturise.

Only a few more days to go till Christmas and with everyone winding down from work and in the mood to hibernate, thanks to the current cold spell hitting the UK I thought it was perfect timing to review the following product.

I was sent a selection of products from the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Deep Moisture Range and one of them has totally stood out to me as something that I love and that I will buy over and over again. The product's name is 'Deep Moisture Comfort Balm', is there any better name for a winter skin moisturiser?

This really is one of those 'does what is says on the tin' type of products, it delivers deep moisture, in the gorgeously light, yet rich combination of a balm. The balm sinks straight into skin, leaves skin soft but not slimy. It is unscented, but in the way that still has that fresh, neutral scent that smells good, but doesn't interfere with perfume. To me, this is the perfect winter moisturiser and I have been using this twice a day since I first started testing it over two weeks ago - my skin feels fantastic.

The added bonus is that you can use it anywhere, hands, face, body... I used it to soothe my red-from-a-cold nose and it worked a treat.

Top marks to Neutrogena.

MAC Warm and Cosy

For a beauty junkie, I am surprisingly NOT obsessed with MAC. Of course, I like the brand, but it's not the be-all and end-all for me.

Having said that, I now find myself feeling very very excited about the post-xmas collection being released on Boxing day. Sat on the sofa a week before crimbo with fluffy snow falling outside, it is very hard not to fall for the collections name 'Warm and Cosy'. The collection includes a huge range of gorgeous shades of lipstick, eye shadows, lip glass, tinted lip conditioner, mineralise skin finish and many many more...

Rather than go through the whole list (it's already all over the blogosphere, so there's no point) I just wanted to focus on the pieces I have my eye on. I know, how selfish of me.

The number one thing for me has to be the Mineralise Skin Finishes (picture above). I love these, especially the ones that are more shimmer/glow than glitter. At the moment I think I want 'By Candlelight' (pink) but I'm also tempted by 'Comfort' (bronze) as would quite like a bronze MSF as the ones I have are all pink or peach.

Both of the MSF's in this collection are limited editions, so going to have to move fast to get the bits I want.

I also quite want the Shadestick in 'cuddle' (frosted light golden yellow) but this is basically just because I like the name, so may have to talk myself down from this one....

Anyway, just wanted to share my lusting for MAC with you. Perhaps this is how the MAC-addiction begins...

Rush Hair, Kings Cross: Review

On Friday last week I went along to the Rush Salon in Kings Cross to have my hair cut and coloured. This was my first visit to a Rush Salon, but had heard some really good things about friends who had been along to other branches of Rush and really liked it - so I was really excited to go see for myself what the fuss was about.

So after a bit of a manic morning attempting to finish Christmas shopping (which did NOT go well) it was a welcome treat to head to the salon. When I arrived I was introduced to Des, my hairdresser, who was lovely.

The first thing that stood out to me was the approach that Des took. Rather than the usual "So, what are we doing today?" question - to which I normally answer "Erm, I don't really mind" (whilst thinking - surely you are the expert and you should be suggesting things???). Des asked me to describe how I feel about my hair, tell her a bit about my lifestyle, how often I wear my hair up, how often I straighten it and if I could change one thing about my hair, what would it be.

This approach was so much easier for me to explain how I feel about my hair and for her to get a clear picture of me as a client really quickly.

So after establishing that I feel very 'blah' (yes, that is an emotion when it comes to hair) we could get on with the fun bit of the whole process, which was to include:

- A protein treatment (before and after colouring to prepare hair and to leave it in good condition)
- A scalp treatment (I have a sensitive scalp)
- Half a head of highlights

- All over glossing treatment (to make the hair look healthy and lift it by around half a shade)
- Hair cut (of course!)

Des was really good at talking through the colour chart, explaining the different colour choices and how they would work with my skin tone - choosing a very pale, cool blond and a darker golden shade to add some depth and contrast. Once the highlights were in, the glossing treatment was covered all over my hair and I was left under the UFO-like heated contraption in the picture. I do like this bit, toasty warm!

Once the highlights were ready, they were taken out and rinsed followed by another protein treatment and the soothing scalp treatment. This is the BEST part of the whole thing - the head massage, honestly - is there anything more relaxing?

Then onto the cut. Des talked through everything she was doing, including checking with me how much length she was planning to cut off and how short she was going to go with the layers. This was very much appreciated, as previously I have had too short layers and it's looked a bit 'mullet', not a look I was aiming for. When it came to my fringe, I was feeling a bit indecisive about going for a full fringe again or sticking with the grown out length, so I can tuck it behind my ears. Decided to keep it long, and think this was the right choice - it has taken me so long to grow it out that it would be a bit foolish to cut it off again. Picture below is 'before' (the cropped pic) and 'after', taken back at home. I love how much brighter my hair looks, thanks to the glossing treatment.
Before

After

The overall ambiance of the salon was lovely, if fairly generic. It wasn't anything dramatically different or worth writing home about. But it was bright, clean and all the staff were friendly and they had a nice spattering of Christmas songs in between the normal pop music - much better than crimbo overload. Complementary drinks and pretzels to nibble on where very welcome - and I probably munched and glugged my way through a few too many of these (I was thirsty after running around Oxford Street!).

Another plus was that I didn't get the hard-sell with the various products that Rush sell, but Des did talk me through a couple that she recommended for my hair type and specifically one that would work for my hair and scalp - which I did buy at the end as it really is a nightmare trying to find a shampoo that treats rather than just strips my scalp, whilst not ruining my hair.

Would I go back? Yep, definitely. I am actually planning to book a return trip for my next hair trim and the boyfriend is thinking of going there for his next cut too. I really loved the all over clear gloss treatment and would definately go for this treatment again.
One of the best things about RUSH is that they regularly have deals and offers on. Recently there was a 30% off colours deal - and I'm sure there will be more deals on in January.

MeMeMe Metallic Ultra Gloss Nail Polish: Review

I was recently sent some bits from the MeMeMe range to review as a bit of an introduction to the brand, as it wasn't one I had covered before on this blog. Of the bits that I was sent there was one thing that immediately stood out to me, and that was the Metallic Ultra Gloss Nail Polish in 'Pewter'.

Something about the colour just grabbed me immediately, Pewter is the perfect name - it's a not quite gold, not quite silver, not quite bronze metallic shade. It's quite unusual whilst also managing to be quite classic too.

When I tested it out, it wasn't just the colour that impressed me. The polish is quite highly pigmented, although two coats would be necessary to make sure the colour is really even. The formula is smooth and glides on easily. It also dries quickly as it is quite thin - I prefer thin formula polishes to thick (would rather paint two fast-dry coats than one thick that takes ages to dry).

The picture above shows just one coat over a base, with no top coat. The metallic finish does mean that there are some marble-like streaks, but this is a nice part of the effect rather than a criticism. I really like the metallic finish on nail colours, I think they look so much nicer than just a flat cream colour.

Wear wise, it doesn't fare too badly. I got through about 3 days without it chipping (with top coat) but there was some tip-wear after a couple of days. Still, not bad for a product that sells for around £4 (and in the three for two at Superdrug at the moment...)

I guess the main positive of this is that I like this colour so much that I am going to go and pick up some more from the range. I have my eye of 'emerald' or 'aqua marine' for my next purchases...

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil: Review

So, anyone who has read this blog, or follows me on Twitter may already know this - but I am a bit in love with the Urban Decay Book of Shadows II. I am probably starting to annoy people by raving about it, but I'm really hoping that if I go on about it enough Santa (aka the boyfriend) might get the hint.

Anyway, Book of Shadows II aside, recently I have been resting out a few of the 24/7 Eye Pencils and want to share my review with you lovely peeps.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil is described as 'unmatched in the industry' for providing intense, creamy colour, in a water-proof, unstoppable formula that literally lasts 24/7.... sounds pretty impressive right?

So what do I think? I am truly impressed by the intensity of these eye liners - the three colours I have been using (below top to bottom: Bourbon, Lust and Electric) are all really bright and vivid. Even Bourbon, the brown, normally just lumped into the 'neutrals' category is somehow brighter and more exciting in this pencil. With a hint of subtle glitter, this colour is really pretty but still subtle enough for daily use. Bourbon is the shade I have used most of the three, using it to line under my eyes as it's a little softer than black for daytime. Look how vibrant the colours are in the picture, and that was taken from a bit of a distance rather than up-close.

The main thing that impresses me about these pencils is that they really DO NOT BUDGE. The swatches I drew on my hand for the picture really didn't smudge, smear or wash off at all with water - but magically came of clean with some eye make-up remover. On the eye it's the same thing - they last all day, but then when you want to take it off they just come off easily.
I really like these eye pencils and now want to add Zero Black and Gunmetal to the collection. At £10 a pencil, the value is really good as the pencils are really big and will last for ages.
Urban Decay is available in Boots (currently part of the buy 3 get 750 advantage card points deal), House of Fraser and Debenhams.

Nubar Chocolate Truffles: Review

I was recently sent the colour 'Raspberry Truffle' from the new Nubar Chocolate Truffles collection. The collection includes six shades that all look and sound as though they are good enough to eat (probably connected to the names... that include 'Chocolate Covered Caramel', 'Cherry Cordial', and 'Milk Chocolate Creme'... yep, I'm salivating just writing them) the shades range from a rich and creamy brown through to a deep berry red. Gorgeous shades for Christmas and winter in general.

Raspberry Truffle is a deep wine red with a fine sparkle running through it. When I first saw the bottle I did think that the sparkle might be a bit 'bling' for me (I'm not a fan of glitter) but when applied it really is such a fine glitter that none of the normal problems with glitter ruining the glossy finish and feeling a bit rough.

This colour is SO gorgeous and perfectly festive. It's going to be a tough choice between wearing this one or Revlon Red on Christmas Day. At the moment I think it will have to be this one as it just looks so rich and glamorous that it is the perfect shade for festiveness.
The picture above is amazingly, only one coat over a base coat. The texture and consistency is really smooth and you would almost forget that there is any glitter in it, plus the pigmentation is really high so one coat delivers a deep and even colour although two coats is usually ideal with any nail varnish. I would suggest that a base coat is essential for any dark colour, or any colour in general that contains glitter. Without it glitter can be a huge pain to get off. Once a top coat had been applied this was perfectly even, glossy and generally rather fabulous.
The Nubar Chocolate Truffles Collection is available from www.beautyshed.co.uk for £8 each.

Beauty stocking fillers: Under £10

Following on from my last post about beauty gifts under £40, I thought I would do a bit of research to see what beauty 'stocking fillers' are out there and put together a 'top 5' that I would love to find in my stocking on the 25th... so here goes.

Number 1: ASOS Paint by Ciate Duos in Agyness and Pixie (£8 from http://www.asos.com/)

I have a couple of these paint pots already (Sienna and Kate) and I love them. This duo includes a metallic purple and a turquoise/green. I also really want to add Alexa to my collection (a deep blue with a shimmer).... Pretty packaging makes for a great stocking filler.

Number 2: POP Pinup Pop Palette (£7 from http://www.asos.com/)

As if I need anymore eye shadows in my life.... but anyway. How gorgeous is this? And for only £7! I love the purple/greys and the neutrals. Plus (magpie strikes again) the packaging is cute!

Number 3: No7 Compact Mirror and Pouch (£8 at http://www.boots.com/)

Gorgeous little stocking filler, pretty little mirror and pouch to put in the handbag. This reminds me or a more affordable version of the stunning Chantecialle palette from the 'Under £40' post.

Number 4: Ruby and Millie Kabuki Brush and Case (£8 from http://www.boots.com/)

Cute little Kabuki with a cute little carry case to protect the bristles and make it easy to carry without it getting grubby or bent in your bag. Perfect for make-up top ups during the day.

Number 5: Lula Bloom Sugar Scrub (£6.99 from http://www.superdrug.com/)

I love the packaging on this scrub, and the name. Plus it would be nice to have *something* non make-up related for Crimbo....

So Santa (Parents/Boyfriend), if your listening. Lovely ideas for stocking fillers above, just a thought...these would be pretty good for Secret Santa prezzies too.

Christmas beauty gifts: favorites under £40

I love a Christmas gift set, there is just something really enticing about an eye shadow palette or a collection of products in a pretty box or generally anything that looks gorgeous. Yep, that's right - I am a packaging magpie. So, recently I have been looking online to find my favorites, partly for the blog and partly to send up the chimney to Santa... I have kept all the prices under £40 and here are my top five:

Number 1: Urban Decay Book of Shadows II (£27 from http://www.boots.com/)

When I first saw this on the lovely Lipglossiping's blog a few weeks ago and I was transfixed, and have been coveting it ever since (see her pictures to understand why HERE). I actually can't really put my finger on why it was that I was so entranced with the colours, but they were just beautiful. As a more neutral make-up type of girl it surprised me that I was to taken by this palette, but the jewel-like turquoises really did fascinate me and I am really keen to try out, especially since by all accounts the texture and pigmentation of the shadows is really impressive. I hope to find out for myself soon... (please Santa, please!)

Number 2: Filofax Beauty Gift Box (£35 from http://www.filofax.co.uk/)

A little bit of a random combination of beauty and stationary - but I like it. The beauty box comes in three colours (pink, beige snakes skin, or the retro print 'fresco') and contains the most amazing girly version of a James Bond gadget ever - a pen with a perfume atomiser inside! Genius... it also contains one of those send-off-for vouchers for either a free hair cut or beauty treatment.

I am lucky enough to have been sent one of these fan-tabulous gift boxes already and truly think it's a lovely idea. In fact I may very well have this in mind for a present for a certain honorary big sister friend (a new one, not the one I was sent - obviously)

Number 3: Diorshow Iconic Mascara Value Gift Set (£20 from http://www.boots.com/)

I love a bit of Dior, just to make me feel all glamorous and love this as a gift set. At only £20 I think this is really good value for a present and have already put this on on my list for the 'rents (a.k.a. Santa). This is literally an iconic product - this gift would suit anyone from make-up virgins to slap junkies.

Number 4: Les Petales Voile de Rose Poudre Delicate - Pressed Powder Chantecaille (£27.40 from http://www.spacenk.co.uk/)

Totally indulgent and totally gorgeous. It is so beautiful that I would probably be afraid to use it if I was lucky enough to find this is in my stocking. Seriously, look at it - how beautiful?!

Number 5: Nars Douveurs de Paris Palette (£37 from http://www.narscosmetics.co.uk/)

There is something about the Nars eye shadows in palettes that makes me just want to reach out and touch them through a computer screen and this is the perfect example. I love the mix of shades between neutral brown day shades and deep, sexy, navy/blue/purple night shades for a gorgeous smokey eye. Gorgeous and luxurious - yet another perfect Christmas present and an ideal introduction for NARS newbies.

This post was inspired by a challenge from http://www.vouchercodes.co.uk/ to put together a list of my five top beauty Christmas gifts. Who would have thought that the website best known for the fab 2-4-1 Pizza Express vouchers also lists beaut deals too... worth a look if you like a bargain.

In fact I just had a quick look on the site and found THIS code for 10% of Benefit Cosmetics, valid till 13th December.

Of all the products mentioned above, only the Filofax is a product that I have tried out, all of the others are just things that have caught my attention enough to make it onto my wish list.

Clinique skin care: Review

About a month ago I went to the Selfridges for the full 'Clinique Experience' - also known as a skin consultation/analysis. To read the review of this process click HERE.

I really enjoyed the consultation and felt that I learnt a few bits about my skin and what I should be doing to look after it. Following this I was sent a specific prescription of products designed for my skin, including:

The Three Step Programme:

Liquid Cleanser 'mild'

Clarifying Lotion '1'

Dramatically Different Moisturiser

Treatment products:

Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief

All About Eyes 'rich'

7 day scrub

Prevention products:

Super Defense SPF 25

Super Rescue antioxidant night moisturiser

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yes - that is a lot of products for a skin care routine. When I was at the counter, talking about my skin needs, I was told that there were 'tiers' of recommendations for my skin - not all of which are essential. Which is good to hear.

I have been using these for three weeks now (since Sunday 15 November, to be precise) so I feel I have given them a decent run in order to pass on my views and opinions. I have been using only the Clinique products for this time (other than a No7 eye make-up remover), the three step programme twice a day, with the other moisturisers being interchanged, depending on how my skin was feeling.

So what do I think? Well, rather than just have an over all view at this stage I thought I would run through each product on its own, starting with the core three step programme.

Liquid Cleanser 'mild'

I do like a foaming cleanser. This one is decent, foams nicely and rinses clean. I did feel that this (followed by the Clarifying Lotion) didn't quite get all my make-up off and leave my skin clean. So when not trialing the whole range I would probably add in an oil cleanser to remove make-up, to be followed by the three step programme.

Clarifying Lotion '1'

As mentioned above, this was the stage when I felt my skin wasn't quite as clean as I would like. When I looked at the cotton pad it still looked quite grubby even after a 'double' cleanse. I amazed by how long this is lasting though, using it every day and barely even used 1/8th.

Dramatically Different Moisturiser

I have used this moisturiser in the past on it's own as part of a varied skin routine. I do like it, but as I have quite dry skin at the moment this wouldn't be enough on it's own. Although anyone with oily skin would probably find this to be perfect.

Overall

I have had no adverse reactions and no spot break-outs at all in the time I have been using this. The major positive I have found is the gentle exfoliating effect of the cleanser and clarifying lotion has helped to solve one of my skin issues that was bothering me when I went for the consultation. I found that the skin on my nose felt oily but then when I applied make-up it tended to look 'flaky' and dry. This isn't the case any more, which is probably a combination of the exfoliation and the extra moisturiser.

The treatments:

Moisture Surge

This is undoubtedly my favorite product that I have been testing. I love how moisturising this product is, but still unbelievably light. This is a translucent gel texture product that just soaks into skin and leaves it soft and smooth with no tackiness or residue. This managed to transform the skin on my cheeks so that they are no longer de-hydrated really quickly.

I could not rave any more about this product if I tried. I love it and will definitely buy this one again when the sample I was sent runs out.

All About Eyes 'rich'

This product was 'prescribed' to me as my other 'problem' area is the skin under my eyes. Personally I feel I have a few too many premature lines, probably because I smile too much (not that there is such a thing as smiling too much!) Either way, I would love to do something to diminish these, or at least prevent them getting any worse.

I have definitely found that moisturising the area does help make the lines less noticeable and this cream, although labeled 'rich', really doesn't feel too thick or heavy for the delicate eye area. One of the best things about this product is that it is good value for money - I have been using this constantly for the past three weeks and have barely made a dent.

7 day scrub

I do love a good scrub. This is nice, creamy with fine particles that offer a decent scrub without being too harsh. I have used this around 2/3 times a week to keep skin fresh and smooth. I like this as it smell nice, but probably wouldn't make it into my must-buy-again list.

Overall

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Moisture Surge product and like the other two. I think it was the moisture surge that has really helped boost my skin.

Prevention products:

Super Defense SPF 25

This was one product that I had high hopes for, but was sadly a bit disappointed with. I had hoped that I would find a really nice moisturiser with a decent SPF level so I could wear it day to day. I was disappointed with this one because I found the texture to be a bit gritty. I'm not sure if this is just a fact of the formula, or if perhaps I got a bit of a dodgy tub? Has anyone else found this at all?

It was just the texture that put me off though, other than that it was OK - but a gritty texture moisturiser isn't really ideal!

Super Rescue antioxidant night moisturiser

On the other hand, the night version of Super Defense was really nice. A bit thicker and creamier than the Moisture Surge, this was good for a real night time treat. I basically alternated this with Moisture Surge at night time over the past few weeks.

Overall

Of all the steps in the programme I was prescribed, this is the one I would skip. I hadn't anticipated this as I thought the SPF cream would have been a must-have. If it turns out that the cream feeling a bit gritty is just a fault, then perhaps I will re-think.

To round up the whole thing:

Having used the whole system for three weeks, what do I think? Well, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I actually quite like the routine of using the same products consistently rather than mixing it up. I think this approach has to be better for my skin in the long run, chopping and changing too much can't be great as skin has to constantly adapt to different formulations.
I also liked the 'ritual' of the cleanse/tone/moisturise/treatment - it may seem like alot of fuss, but it was really straight forward and doesn't take long at all.

One of the things I am surprisingly impressed with is the value for money that it offers - no, it's not cheap. I just added the 3-step products I was sent into a cart on the Clinique.co.uk site and it came up as costing £63 for the lot. BUT - if you look at the photo below, it shows how three weeks has barely registered on the amount of product in the bottles. I would estimate that products of these sizes (200ml soap, 400ml clarifying lotion and 125ml dramatically different) would last around six months (possibly a little less for the soap which seems to be emptying the quickest) So at £63 over six months, that's only just over £10 a month for a whole skin care routine - not too bad?

The million dollar question though is, will I continue with the routine and will I buy again?
Yes, I will continue with the routine. Although I will be adding an oil pre-cleanser to help shift stubborn make-up before the 3-step. I probably wont be using the Super Defense regularly because I don't like the texture, so will have to find another SPF cream to add into the mix.

Will I buy again? I will definitely, definitely, definitely buy the Moisture Surge again, I have no doubt at all about that. I am pretty confident I will buy the three step again, probably about 85% sure if it does in practice last as long as I predict it will. But, to be honest - I doubt I would buy the other products again.

L'Oreal Extra Volume Collagene Mascara: Review

I am loving the latest deal from Superdrug, with ALL the make-up ranges being on a mix and match 3 for 2 - who doesn't love a bargain. So, this week I picked up a couple of bits that I have had my eye on for a while and here is the review of the first of them (others still to come).

One of the things I bought was the L'Oreal Extra Volume Collagene Mascara in smokey black. I didn't really know what to expect from 'smokey' black. I guessed it was either extremely black or a dark grey/black - when I opened the tube I realised it was the later, a dark grey black. This is actually really nice for me as pale-skinned blonde, super black can look a bit extreme for daytime so grey can be a tad more subtle.

I read a couple of reviews of this and it seems as though the general opinion of this is that it amazing. But I thought I would add my opinion into the mix...

What do I like about the mascara?

Quite a lot actually - I like the fat brush, I like the various length bristles and the tapered end. It makes applying it to all lashes easy. I do have a general preference for brush mascara applicators over comb applicators - probably because I have managed to poke myself in the eye a few too many times with the combs. I really like the dark grey colour, as mentioned above.

The shallow side of me also loves the fat tube and glossy black packaging.

I think the formula of this is really nice - it gives a decent amount of length and volume in a single application. A couple of coats and you can achieve a strong effect. The picture below shows how it looks with about 3 coats on the top lashes, but none on the bottom.

What do I not like about the mascara?

The only thing I am not as keen on with this mascara is the fact that it isn't that easy to remove. Even using a cleansing oil and eye make-up remover followed by a face wash it still seems to leave me with panda eyes the next morning. Not a huge complaint really, but worth mentioning.

Would I re-purchase?

Yes. (nice and simple answer there!)

Laptop love...

Just catching up on a few of my favorite blogs and I came across the new Dell partnership with OPI on Vex in the City and I think it's love.

I am planning to buy a new laptop in the new year and was considering going for a mac book. I wont lie, a large part of the reason I want a mac book is because they look extremely cool (yes, I am that shallow)... But now, having seen pictures of the new Dell with OPI laptops I may have to change my mind. I was *slightly* struggling to justify the extra cost of the mac book based purely on the fact that I think it looks pretty, so perhaps the Dell is the perfect solution - it looks gorgeous and is a bit more affordable than the mac option.

In my predictable fashion, my favorite shades are the dirty purples (You don't know Jaques and Parlez Vous OPI to be specific).

Which are your favorites? Or do you think it's going to far to match my laptop to my nail colour?

Eyes Lips Face: Mineral Eyeshadow in 'Natural'

This week I have had a bit of a thing for 'elf' and made not one, but two orders. The first order comprised of:
  • elf mineral eye shadow in 'natural'

  • elf studio eye shadow in 'pebble'

  • elf studio blush in 'candid coral'

  • elf studio minty lip gloss in 'New York City' (more on this later)

  • elf nail polish in 'mod mauve'

  • elf mineral eye liner in 'ash'

  • Plus three make-up brushes from the main elf collection (eye shadow, blender blush and angled blusher brush)
Since then I have ordered two more mineral eye shadows, in 'socialite' and 'temptress'.

I really like the elf mineral shadow in natural. I decided to order it as I read on another blog (I can't remember which one though, sorry) that it was a pretty good version of Stilla 'Kitten' eye shadow. Having had a bit of a play with the colour this afternoon, I have decided that the colour is lovely but it does need an eye-shadow primer or base to make it last. The picture below gives a pretty accurate image of the shade, a really pretty neutral with a gorgeous shimmer. It's an ideal base for all over the eye or as a highlight.

I used the elf eye shadow brush to apply the shadow. This is the second one of these that I have bought as I loved the first one and thought having an extra was a good investment - especially when it was only £1.50. I do love a bargain. The mineral shadows are great value too, at only £3 a pot.

Skin primers: Benefit 'That Gal' brightening face primer

I'm having a bit of a 'primer' moment. There are no less than three primers that I am using as a regular part of my day to day make-up routine. Yes, I realise that is excessive, but they each do something unique to make the rest of my make-up look that little bit better.

The three primers I am currently using are:

- Benefit 'That Gal' Brightening Face Primer

Of the three, I have reviewed the first two, but as a reminder. The No7 is fantastic for mattifying skin, so I'm using this on my nose and forehead to prevent the dreaded oil slick. The L'Oreal Studio Secrets Resurfacing Primer is amazing for making fine lines vanish under my eyes and minimise pores.

The third primer is a new addition to the routine, hence this review. I have added this to help combat winter dullness and keep skin glowing and healthy looking. This pink primer is light and comes in a prit-stick like package, with a twist-up base to dispense the product gradually.

The pale pink shade adds a subtle warmth to skin and some radiance without being pearly or shiny. The effect is subtle, as with most primers, but it does create the perfect base for foundation. I can only comment on how it works for my pale skin, but I would be interested to hear how this works for darker skin shades?

What do I like about this primer?

It's light, so doesn't feel like I am 'caking' on my make-up.

It smells nice, with a hint of vanilla.

It is a healthy looking base for make-up.

What don't I like?

The packaging isn't as cute as most of the Benefit range. It's a little bit basic and a tad cheap looking.

The effect is so subtle that it's pretty much invisible, so I can't take pictures to show! It's one of those products that the affect is probably in my head more than actually on my skin.

The million dollar question - would I repurchase?

Probably not. Of all the Benefit products I own, this isn't the most mind-blowing. I would be happy to just skip this step in my make-up routine. It's a nice addition, but not an essential.

Tommyguns Climate Control Styling Spray: Review

I was sent the Tommyguns Climate Control Styling Spray to review about a week ago and to be honest I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. The spray claims to be 'the ultimate holding and protecting stying spray giving shape, body and volume. Protecting against all climates - rain or shine'.

I had serious doubts that a single product could manage to do all of those things with a simple spritz. Having used the spray daily since I received it, I am converted. I am converted for two main reasons: firstly the luscious smell and secondly how amazingly soft and smooth my hair is.

The spray contains jojoba oil ('for enhanced shine') and I think this is what smells so delicious. I absolutely adore the scent and probably apply a little more product than I should, just to smell it. It also contains witch hazel for enhanced smoothness and softness - I can vouch for this as I keep running my fingers through my hair. It feels sooo amazingly silky from root to tip.

This doesn't really add that much volume to my naturally flat hair, but it doesn't leave it feeling as 'blah' and lifeless as usual, so add a bit of hairspray and I'm a happy girl.

Packaging wise, Tommyguns is simple but stylish and I would be happy to have this on show. The packaging also looks far more expensive than the price point of £5.99 for 150ml.

As always, the burning question: would I repurchase? Yes, wholeheartedly YES. I love this product and will definitely buy my own bottle when the sample I was sent runs out.

Bargain alert!

Quick post to let everyone know there is a fantastic reduction on in M&S at the moment: 50% off the 'Ingredients' range, including all body butters. They have a HUGE number of different scents all reduced from £6 to £3. Plus all sorts of other items including 'sampler' packs, gift bags and lip butters. I reviewed the Mango body butter a few months ago and I loved it, so very happy to have a couple more.

I was in the Westfield M&S last night and picked up the Shea Nut and Fig body butters, plus a pack of 3 lip butters for a total of £8.50. (There is also a buy 1 get one free on tortilla chips, but that's not totally relevant...)

Who doesn't love a bargain?!

Korres Kumquat Body Butter and Shower Gel: Review

Korres is a brand that I have heard a lot about, but not tried until very recently, when I was approached by their PR and asked if I would like to. Of course, I was excited to test out a brand that I had heard good things about.

I was sent the Kumquat Body Butter and Shower Gel to test out. The scent is described as 'bittersweet' with the effect as 'awakening', perfect - since it is proving a little difficult to drag myself out of bed on these colder winter mornings...

The packaging of the Korres products is nice, but not anything spectacular. To me, it doesn't look like a product that would 'jump out' at me on a shelf and make me want to buy. I do however, like the pump dispenser on the body butter packaging, most body butter comes in the standard tub that you have to 'scoop' your fingers into to get the product out. The pump applicator is much more practical for a daily body-butter user, like myself.

The smell of both the shower gel and the body butter is delicious, bittersweet is really the perfect description. The smell has managed to capture the perfect juicy sweet and bitter citrus essence of the Kumquat and is a lovely refreshing way to wake up for a morning shower.

Something that is worth noting on both of these products is that the scent doesn't last. This can be both a positive and a negative, depending on what you are looking for. This is a great thing if you want something that just wakes you up and is more of a 'shower experience' but then doesn't linger and interfere with your perfume.

The downside is that if you like the smell and want it to last, then you will be disappointed with these.

I fall more into the 'shower experience' category, so this works for me. It wakes me up and smells delicious, but then I can move on to getting dressed without the worry that I will smell part Chanel, part Kumquat.

The price is higher than high street obviously, but not as high as I expected - £7 for the shower gel and £11.50 for the body butter. Based on a weeks daily usage of both, the shower gel is better value for money as I have only used about 1/8 of the bottle, whereas in the same time I have already worked through about 1/3 of the body butter tube.

Onto the burning question - would I repurchase (or buy replacements when the ones I was sent run out)?

Yes, and no.

I would probably repurchase the shower gel as I really enjoy the shower experience but no, I wouldn't repurchase the body butter as I just don't feel it works for me, despite liking the pump dispenser, I find the texture to be nice but not amazing as it doesn't absorb too easily.

On the other hand, this has been a good introduction to the Korres brand and has made me curious to investigate more. I'm particularly keen to try out the lip butter, as at the weekend I was tweeting about needing to find a decent lip balm for winter and a couple of other tweeters suggested Korres as a good brand to try. I'm also quite interested in testing out their colour cosmetics, as I know some people rave about them.
