There once was a time when the idea of a blogger having a make-up collection in store was just a silly idea, or a long-off dream. But as the past year has shown, it’s not only possible but can be big business for a brand and a great opportunity for a blogger. The latest to join the beauty blogger/brand collaboration market is Jane from British Beauty Blogger. Jane is a power house of beauty blogging. Her blog is very much a hub of all that’s new in beauty land – in the UK and beyond. Plus she’s not one who is a afraid to call out a product, brand, PR or agency if they fall short and she’s definitely one to tell it like she sees it. Originally a beauty journalist, before she started her beauty blog – so knows the beauty industry inside out.
Her latest endeavour, being to partner with Marks & Spencer to launch her own range of products. Which as a blogger I can imagine is both very exciting and quite surreal!
The range includes a nail set (six shades), Kohl Liner collection (eight shades), a palette with six eye shades and one cheek plus a trio of lip crayons. Each packaged within a kit with illustrations by Nuno da Costa – who also created Jane’s header art on her blog. The illustrations really are gorgeous and create a really striking look for the packaging. I also really love the rose illustrations on the lip crayons (seen below) as makes them stand out from the other fairly generic designed crayons on the market.
But beyond pretty packaging designs, what are the products like?
British Beauty Blogger M&S Kohl Collection:
The first thing that struck me about this is the inclusion of the lilac shade. A bit fo a curve ball in my eyes – it takes me right back to being told I couldn’t get into the dinner hall in high school until I took my lilac eyeliner off by the dinner lady. So I will always have a soft spot for lilac, it is a pretty colour – but a fairly bold choice for a liner collection. Other stand out shades for me are the shimmering black and the rich bronze. I also like that there’s a mix of shimmer and matte options with the blue/green shades in there. For £15 for eight good quality pencil liners you can’t really fault them.
British Beauty Blogger for M&S Lip Crayon Trio:
I love the small size and gorgeous rose illustrations on these. It’s a bit of a shame this packaging on the actual product doesn’t show in the box as I think it’s a real stand out feature. The shades of these did surprise me – in the bullet they look darker and less vibrant than they are when swatched. When on the skin they’re a warm reddish pink, a true nude and a bright pink. All good for those who want something a bit softer than a lipstick, easy to apply but maybe a bit more subtle than the shine of a gloss. My favourite is the hot pink shade (called Selfie).
British Beauty Blogger for M&S Nail Colours
Six shades, some of which being what you might put into ‘predictable’ M&S shades- the pearly pink shade for one. Personally, these don’t have me bowled over (but worth remembering I’m probably not the target market as someone who likes blue/grey sorts of shades). Having said that, the darker shades are really strong on pigment and application. The two purple shades being the strongest of the bunch. But the range of shades is nice, it’s fun to see brighter colours in there even though it’s launching in more typically dark-shade months.
British Beauty Blogger for M&S The Palette
A palette with six eyeshadow shades, a small (but very good) brush and a cheek colour. The shades themselves are safe and wearable – with three typically smokey eye shades. Then a slightly more interesting rosy and peach shades plus a white. The shades are nice, shimmering, smooth and pigmented. The colour pay off is good and the colour range interesting but wearable. The stand out to me though is the blusher shade at the end – really pretty and would love to see this as a stand alone. My only comment on the palette is that it might have been nice to have a mix of shimmer and matte shades in there. From the shades in there the peachy one and the two grey shades are my favourites.
Overview: British Beauty Blogger for Marks & Spencer
Firstly, I love seeing a beauty blogger work with any brand on such a scale. It’s just pure testament to the impact of beauty blogging on the industry and is amazing to see. Personally I never used to think of myself as the sort of blogger who would want that sort of product range. But the more I see it, the more I wonder myself what I would do given the chance. Not that it’s on the cards at all, but looking at this range just makes me ponder it a little! Just imagining the whole process from start to finish is really interesting.
For me, the range is good value and makes for affordable gift options for upcoming Christmas. My top picks from the whole collection would be the Kohl set and the Lip Trio.
British Beauty Blogger for M&S is available NOW! Congratulations to Jane on her launch!
