I used to be a hopeless packer. I’ve always had these visions of myself as one of those effortlessly stylish and glamorous travellers who has a neatly packed lightweight bag who just breezes through security and on to the plane (with the hope that I look so stylish and glam that they bump me up to First Class…) so far I haven’t quite managed this level of packing. But I have gotten better at it and thought it might make a handy little post to show what I pack in my carry on bag and how I keep it organised for as stress free a flight as possible.
First up on the carry on bag packing list is a decent carry on bag… obviously. I tend to prefer slouchy bags that are both roomy and practical – but look equally good when filled to the brim, as when more empty. The bag I used for my current trip is a recent purchase from Zara in a bright sunflower yellow that has both short and a longer cross-body handle to it. Very handy to have both as when you’re at the point of dragging your main case it can just make carrying both easier.
Then in the bag I basically have three main things – my carry on beauty kit (in a clear make-up bag so I don’t need to unpack the lot into a plastic bag), a small make-up bag filled with all the wires/cables etc I need for the trip. My travel wallet with my passport, boarding pass and any cards or cash I’m taking with me. For me, the key to this is keeping things that would make your carry on cluttered into their own little compartments to keep it neat. The only other ‘big’ things not shown here that I carry on are my macbook air laptop and Canon EOS-M Camera – both perfect for on the go as so much more compact and light than their bulkier equivalents.
The little face make-up bag was a gorgeous little one that arrived filled with some classic Clinique make-up bits but the roomy design makes it perfect for all the cables and gadgety bits I need. In there I have my laptop charger, phone charger, plug adaptors, camera charger, SD Card Adaptor and portable iPhone charger battery. Rather than having all the cables loose in the bag – so much easier.
As for inflight beauty that I take in my carry on bag I basically have a few ‘essential’ categories – what will keep me feeling/smelling as fresh as possible, what will stop my skin from being drier than the Sahara when I land and what make-up bits do I need to try and hide that post-flight tired look. In this carry on bag I have the following for each ‘category’:
Ole Henriksen Brightening Cleansing Cloths – good for an easy in-flight cleanse, although I don’t tend to wear make-up on flights.
Klorane Dry Shampoo (mini size) – Hair always seems to end up static & flat after flying so this is essential.
Rituals Qi Gong Deodorant (mini size) – A mini deodorant is an essential.
Travel Toothbrush and Toothpaste – Perfect to freshen post-nap breath ahead of landing (also, gum – essential).
Diptyque Eau Moheli Rollerball Perfume – Small and convenient and smells dreamy. Can apply without spritzing whole plane.
Hydraluron – Pretty much the only constant carry on beauty essential. Can’t fly without it.
Papaya Gold Paw Paw Moisturising Balm (good for lips, cuticles & hands) – Love a multi-tasker.
Zelens 31 Complex Essential Anti-ageing Cream (mini size) – I have a whole host of mini moisturisers ready for flights or weekends away. I’m loving this one.
Origins Drink Me Up Mask (mini size – one use, so only works one way of the journey!) – Post cleanse will apply this to leave skin being hydrated all flight long.
La Roche Posay Cicaplast Lip Balm (mentioned HERE) an awesome lip balm for dry lips.
Benefit Hello Flawless Powder – to combat the in-flight shine on landing.
By Terry Eyebrow Mascara – Easily puts brows back in place.
Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Balm – Just a hint of colour.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (reviewed HERE – amazing mascara).
My Little Beauty Stylo Lumiere – brightening/highlighter to fake a little glow…
So yeah…maybe still not quite managed to nail the whole ‘packing light’ thing. But that sums up my essentials for a flight.
