That time of the year again. One night, technically nothing more than the date changes yet something in the air gives us that feeling we have a fresh start and clean slate. We can put the past year and anything that happened behind us. I don’t have any big personal drama or sob stories from the past year. It just wasn’t overall the best. But I know I learnt a lot last year. Particularly work wise. So I look forward to putting it into practice in 2017. A few of the things I’ve decided are very important to me for the year ahead that I wanted to share.
Quality over quantity – I used to blog daily, and sometimes more than once a day. But then I realised that the ‘best’ level that works for me is around 3-4 times a week. So this is my target for the year ahead. I’m not going to bust a gut to blog daily or beat myself up if I miss a day. What I want to do is produce more content I’m pleased with so the focus is very much on quality for 2017. Including improving my photography. It’s something I love doing and want to do more and more of. I have a mini photo studio set up at home now so no more excuses – more photos happening.
Always be useful – Now, this is very much each to their own but for me there’s a side to styles of blogging that is totally valid BUT not for me. One of the things I realised in 2016 is that trying to fit the exact same ‘mould’ of blog just doesn’t sit right for me. Very personal and in no way is that to say there’s anything at all wrong with that side of blogging. But for me I find some of them are all about looking fabulous in a place or taking beautiful photos but sometimes I feel there’s maybe little less substance in the text for the reader beyond the appreciation of how pretty it all looks.
What I want to do is always make sure the useful information for the readers comes first. So when I do travel content – I’m not just sharing lovely photos but also giving information that could help if you’re planning to visit there yourself. Or for beauty, reviews are always clear and show the product in action. I would hate for someone to make a purchase on my recommendation and feel they bought a duff product! Then for home content I want to be able to spark ideas that you can realistically recreate in your own home. You get the idea. It might sound like such an obvious thing to state. I want it to be genuinely useful information that a regular reader and someone who stumbles across the blog through google can equally find useful and interesting to their own lives.
Be more social – It’s somewhat ironic in a way that I do a tonne of social stuff for my clients that I work with but when it comes to my own… I can rely a little too heavily on the things that happen automatically. Not for any reason beyond time and focus I think. I want to take away those automated link sharing things a little more this year and get more active. Do some more live stuff and regular on Instagram stories. My big ‘roadblock’ is that I just don’t think anyone is all that interested in me or my life so I don’t bother sharing. But I want to use it more like a way of chatting to my ‘colleagues’ and just having that outlet each day to natter to whoever will listen! So will do more than the occasional unboxing. I also want to join in more Twitter chats and generally be more active on my own social media across each channel – and not just duplicate across them all.
Speak up more – There are times when I tend to keep quiet when I do have an opinion. I don’t like to offend people and being controversial isn’t me. However, there are times I do want to speak up and I want to stop being so wary of what other people might think and speak out a bit more. Not necessarily getting into controversy but more speaking out about things I have experience of or an opinion on. Especially if it might help others. I can’t really say what this will look like yet, because I don’t know. But I want to stop holding myself back from talking about things.
Take Better Care of Myself – I’m not the best at taking care of myself. I never make exercise a priority, it’s the first thing on my list to be scrapped if I’m busy. If I have to cook for myself, I’m WAY too lazy. Let alone cooking for both Ollie and I. I want to focus less on how I look but more on how I feel. I’ve realised a little more about what exercise works for me and what doesn’t. i.e. I hate running with a passion. This year I want to make diet choices a priority and stop using food as a feel good fix. I want to try out doing yoga – both as a way to relax and zone out for a bit along with using that as some gentle exercise. No weight loss goals or ‘right, I’m never having a burger again’. Because that’s a lie. I just want to make some better choices and slowly but surely get better at looking after myself. I also want to make more of an effort to cook for Ollie at home – he usually does the cooking which is great. But I want to do that for him from time to time too. More green beans. Less cheese.
What are your goals and plans for 2017? Blog, life and anything else? Hopefully a few of the above might give you a bit of an idea of what you might expect on here for the year ahead.
I’m excited to see what 2017 has in store. Fingers crossed no more Brexit/Trump sort of shockers…
