Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne

Back in early 2018 when I was getting towards the end of my pregnancy with Eleanor I attended a launch for the Wildflowers & Weeds Jo Malone collection. To date it has been easily a favourite of the limited edition releases. To the point that whilst I was fortunate enough to be sent home with two scents from the range I made it my mission to purchase the other two I loved. One of which I succeeded in, the other – Poppy & Barley – was so popular that I didn’t manage to pick one up before it sold out. Now, there’s nothing like ‘limited edition’ or ‘sold out’ to make me want something even more than I already did. So you can imagine the happy dance I did when I heard it was coming back and it would be permanent.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne is back as a permanent addition to the Jo Malone family. Which is excellent news if you like your fragrances soft and powdery with a floral side that’s not too in your face. There’s something lovely and warming about the Poppy & Barley combination that is just gorgeous as the Summer cools into Autumn. Definitely the perfect time of year for this.

I love the colours and styling that’s gone into the new launch. My bottle arrived with this beautiful peachy-pink crepe flower attached and there’s something just very ‘end of British Summer’ about it all. I can’t put my finger on it, perhaps a nostaligia of Harvest Festivals?

The notes of the fragrance include a custom blend for the ‘poppy’, because a poppy doesn’t really have a distinctive scent the note here is an accord created from ‘red rose and green notes’ – as described by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui, one of the creators of the scent. Alongside this there are notes of violet, bran, white musk, blackcurrant, barley, fig and generally powdery notes.

I would say that if you love Blackberry and Bay then this will be your sort of thing. It is a fairly soft fragrance and don’t feel it has quite the same impact and staying power as Blackberry and Bay, but it is a beautiful one and would work well to layer or do a little fragrance combining with. It would work well with Wood Sage & Sea Salt for something a little fresher.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Cologne is available now from Selfridges (£48 for 30ml)
