YSL has a new addition to their Vernis A Levres Glossy Stain range – and they are rather curiously named ‘Rebel Nudes’…now before you mock me and point out that rather clearly one of the shades is a bright pink shade…hear me out! The whole concept is basically that the shades are more sheer than the usual glossy stain colours that are quite powerful colour wise. The new Rebel Nudes are a playful take on the idea of the nude – hence the rebel part. So there are some brighter shades, but the sheer element is designed to make them easier to wear for those that maybe shy away from lip colour most of the time.
The two shades I have fallen for are ‘104: Fuchsia Tomboy’ and ‘103: Pink No Taboo’ – I love the names of these…playful, like the idea of the who range.
So the two shades, immediately – they look quite similar. But on the lips I think there’s quite a difference. First up, ‘Fuchsia Tomboy’ – it really is a true fuchsia, if you like a bright lip then this would be more your sort of rebel nude style. To be honest, there really isn’t much nude about this, it definitely leans towards the rebel side. But I am a total sucker for a bright pink lip and as such, this is a total hit with me. The formula is the same sort of familiar, slightly watery/fresh feeling liquid that applies and really manages to cross that gloss/stain line – staining, without drying, glossy without sticky. They really are rather fab.
Then there’s shade 103 Pink No Taboo – this is more within the nude family, I think of this as a bit of a ‘my lips but better’ type of shade, but with a little extra bit of colour pop. This one currently has pride of place in my handbag make-up bag for daytime touch-up as its one of those perfect day to-night shades that looks natural enough not to draw attention but still strong enough to look polished like there’s a bit of effort behind your look.
Personally, I love the idea – although some die-hard nude fans might be a tad disappointed when they realise the colours are more than just various shades of pinky-ish concealer colours. I think it’s a fun idea and the formula of the YSL glossy stains are one of my favourites so I’ll always be a fan whatever the shades (within reason…not totally on board with green…)
