Goodness me, it feels like an awfully long time since my trip to Texas back in June/July. Where has the summer/year gone?! I feel like it’s definitely flown past and now we’re on the cusp of autumn and I don’t know what happened. But, before we get into all things autumn I wanted to do a little flash back to the little (not so little) US beauty haul that happened whilst I was there. The big novelty factors being that because we were in Texas rather than New York it meant bigger stores and the wonder that is Target. Quite possibly my favourite place to shop beauty in the US now. So without further ado, a little run down of all the bits and bobs I picked up in Texas.
I really like US sun care, so I picked up a few. The Banana Boat spray is one that ZoeLdn brought my attention to so I picked up a ‘cool zone factor 50’ of this. Plus I made sure to pick up a few mini sized ones that are handy for out and about – including a Banana Boat Sport Cream in SPF 30 for Ollie to use when he goes off doing various bike rides and things and doesn’t want to carry a bulky one with him.
I also picked up a Hawaiian Tropic Sport in SPF 30 and a large tub of the CVS Aftersun Cooling Gel with Lidocaine and Aloe Vera. I’ve used this stuff in the past and it’s an absolute gem if you maybe got yourself a little accidentally sun burnt (can happen to even the most cautious). I actually did get a bit sun burned on the 4th July – I blame a couple too many celebratory cocktails by the pool when I should have been keeping my wits about me and re-applying sun cream. But this stuff is amazing for cooling and numbing the pain of sunburn all at the same time.
I went hunting for these in the dollar section of Target (I know, I’m too classy) as I spotted them on an instagram post somewhere (can’t remember who or where, sorry!) but thought for $1 they were a pretty cute bargain. So I hunted them down and picked up these colourful little pencils along with a few printed designs too (not shown).
This is probably the area I really went to town on the purchase front. I picked up a couple of old favourites (hello EOS Hand Cream – too cute and perfectly small and light to carry around). Then I bought a tube of the Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream – in all honesty (and even after a bit of research) I can’t truly say what it is that this does exactly. Some sources say it’s a gradual tan, but I didn’t really find that it had any sort of tanning effect. But what I did find is it just leaves skin looking and feeling gorgeously smooth. With a bit of a perfected finish – maybe like a primer in a way. Leaving skin a little better than before but still very natural and not at all masked. This is one I liked so much that I decided to go out and get another tube before I headed back across the pond.
Also on the skin perfecting front I picked up a tub of ‘Gold Bond Ultimate’ for rough and bumpy skin. Designed to help tackle KP (keratosis pilaris or ‘chicken skin’ found typically on upper arms). It was really interesting actually to find Target has quite a wide offering of KP designed products to tackle this sort of issue. In the UK we don’t seem to even talk about it all that much – despite it being a pretty common thing. Maybe it just comes down to the vast size of US stores meaning they have more shelf space to offer this sort of variety. But I’d love to see more KP specific brands on offer in the UK. Having said all that, I haven’t tried this yet so can’t say if it actually works or not.
On the make-up front I didn’t go too nuts. I picked up a tube of Maybelline Better Skin Concealer, which I already love but comes in different packaging in the UK so wanted to try this version out and see if I liked it as much. I also got the rather gorgeous Maybelline Blushed Nudes Palette – hello Urban Decay Naked Palette 3 sort of dupe. A milani blush, mainly for the rose pattern shape than the colour… a Maybelline Baby Lips Gloss (kind of an impulse purchase that one) and a ELF Blush Palette – E.L.F. seems to have vanished from the UK (I believe it’s due to relaunch later in the year) so it was nice to see a few bits from the brand in person as it’s one I’ve had a soft spot for since my early days blogging. I also picked up a few make-up bits from Sephora but will cover those off below.
Oh and I also bought an Essie shade I realised when I got home I already had…. doh. You know you have an Essie problem when… this is the lovely pale blue/slightly lilac shade that is Essie Saltwater Happy (Summer 2015 collection).
I didn’t get a huge amount skincare wise, but I had heard about the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Cream before as it apparently is amazing and I love anything that offers something like a ‘hydro boost’ around the eye area as that’s naturally a dry skin problem zone for me. Also on an impulse I picked up the Garnier Blackhead Eliminating Scrub – it’s a tiny size so don’t know if it’s travel sized or just meant to be that big?! Again, not tried so can’t talk about how good/average/bad it is yet.
Of course any trip to the US isn’t complete without a trip to Sephora. So after making Ollie drive me around to find the best one (also did the same on hunt for a Super Target as a mere ‘normal’ Target just wouldn’t do. I was actually quite restrained. I picked up the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 Styling Treatment – again, not yet tried but have high hopes. A Kaplan MD Perfect Pout Duo – which is a lip mask and a lip balm combo. By mask it’s actually a scrub – which was just what I’ve been after as my lips are dryer than the Sahara right now. I also picked up one of the Bite Beauty double ended lip colours as these were out of stock when I was in the US last time in San Francisco last year – in the shade Tangerine and Lingonberry (anyone else find Lingonberry reminds them of that drink in Ikea?) at $14 it was a bargain and I really like the bright shades I chose. Of course I couldn’t not pick up a Formula X for Sepehora nail colour – so after much deliberation I chose the mint green shade Unmistakable. Which I actually used for the first time this weekend… or should I say tried to use. I was really disappointed with this shade -it looks lovely but the brush was really thin, formula thin and uneven. It was just not easy to apply at all – and I ended up just taking it all off and starting from scratch with another colour. That hasn’t happened in a long time and I wasn’t too impressed.
I also chose a little mini Josie Maran Coconut Watercolour Cheek Gelee – the mini size is ideal as it means I don’t feel like I’m being wasteful using it and it’s good if I’m travelling at all. Then I picked up a white eye liner from the Sephora own brand make-up range (and was very close to getting an electric blue too). Then, because it was my birthday month (I was actually in Texas for my birthday-day) I got to get the ‘special’ Sephora Insiders gift of two mini NARS lip pencils, plus I used some points to take home a Caviar CC Cream premium sample size. Not bad huh?!
Not bad for a little US Beauty Haul huh?! Now just to get trying now I’m ever so slightly less distracted than I feel like I have been for the past few months! Any products on here on your US shopping wish list??
