We’re smack bam in the middle of the season of excess. Food, drink, late nights, shopping stress, air con and hot tubes and all sort of other fun things. After a while it can take it’s toll on your skin an spring up a whole bunch of different issues. From dullness, to breakouts, or dry patches. So I thought I’d do a little post party skincare SOS with a few saviour products to help get those niggles and issues back under control. Or at least cheat your way through it until we’re out the other side and have the whole month of Jan to glug water and chomp on salads before returning to relative normality in February!
Problem: Post-indulgence breakouts
A common problem, I get breakouts if I have more dairy than usual (I cut back on dairy at the start of 2016 and saw a massive difference in my skin) but if the amount of dairy I have increases then I see it first in my skin. Same for greasy, fatty food. All of which is pretty prevalent at Christmas and so a post-party break out is probably on the cards if it’s the sort of skin issue you suffer from. I tend to have one or two monster spots rather than an all over break out, so opt for on-the-spot targeted skincare to tackle them.
Skincare SOS Solution: Kiehls Breakout Control Targeted Blemish Spot Treatment (£24 Feel Unique)
Intense enough to work, but gentle enough to avoid overall dryness. One I have in my stash ready for any spot-issues. Added bonus is that it works well with sensitive skin types so not to harsh as some spot treatments can be.
Problem: Stressed Skin & Sleeplessness
Not getting enough Zzz’s is the quickest way to dulls-ville in my opinion. From dark circles to general lack-lustre skin. With a million to-do lists whirring around your head, to late nights meaning sleep is maybe not quite as excessive as the rest of the season. Roll on the Christmas break when naps are positively encouraged! But until then, it’s going to be late nights getting ready for the big day (we’re hosting this year so pressure is ON). I still have a pretty sizable chunk of Christmas shopping to do too… so ideas for that are often popping into my head right as it hits the pillow… swiftly followed by a late night google sesh and some midnight online shopping. So when I do get to actual shut-eye, I’ve been loving adding a special night oil into my routine.
Skincare SOS Solution: Kiss The Moon Calm Night Oil (£48 Look Fantastic)
Rich and smells delicious. Maybe a bit of a placebo, but I don’t care. There’s something about this – the smell, the ingredients and the luxurious feeling of putting it on that just lulls me into a sleepy place. Plus an oil at this time of year is a sure fire way to wake up with plumped up glowing skin.
Problem: Dull Skin
Like the above, lacking sleep and maybe a few too many glasses of fizz can lead to a dull complexion. The temptation is to load up on make-up to hide the guilt of all the fun and games showing on your skin. My preferred way to hide that tell-tale dullness is a little dash of fake sunshine…. in the form of a little splash of fake tan. Just a touch so you don’t end up with a face that’s a different colour to your body. But adding a dose of fake tan to your moisturiser can just help give your skin a little (fake) oomph to look a bit fresher than you probably feel.
Skincare SOS Solution: Vita Liberata Self Tanning Anti Age Serum (£29.95 Look Fantastic)
A lightweigh serum that combines a dose of light fake-tan with some hydrating/anti-ageing benefits. It feels silky smooth to use. My tip, cleanse skin when you get in from a night out and slap a bit of this on with a nice rich moisturiser overnight. Then when you wake up you will have that touch more glow about you. As an extra boost I recommend a speedy face sheet mask in the morning whilst you brush your teeth… it makes a world of difference!
Problem: Tired Eyes
Do you get the theme here? Late nights? Lacking sleep? Busy days? All add up to a bunch of exhausted-looking skincare issues. My biggest one would have to be tired eye. My fine lines around my eyes are my biggest beauty bug-bear and they show about a million (possible exaggeration) times worse when tired or dehydrated. But recently I’ve found an eye cream that works as a perfect quick fix and doubles as a lovely primer product before make-up.
Skincare SOS Solution: Aveda Botanical Kinetics Energising Eye Cream (£23.80 Look Fantastic)
Lightweight but hydrating. Means you can pop under make-up (or even dab over if you need a hydration boost in the afternoon) and it just gives an immediate boost. Makes my eyes feel fresher and immediately less tired. Works absolute wonders when you throw in an eye-spray like THIS one from Optrex too. Hangover cure combo right there.
Problem: All over dryness
Cold outside, warm inside can combine to result in super-dry skin. Heating plus chilly weather does not a happy complexion make. I suffer from dryness quite badly at this time of year. Particularly on my hands and around my nose. So I love to have a good all-rounder hydrating but soothing product on hand to combat any dry patches that flare up.
Skincare SOS Solution: 10 Balm Indeed Labs (£19.99 Look Fantastic)
Containing 10 key ‘healing’ ingredients (hence the name) this balm works as an amazing all rounder for dry or irritated skin. Including Arnica, Bee Pollen and Vitamin E. It delivers a hit of moisture, but also a calming/soothing effect too. Which is great for skin that’s maybe suffering from the temperature extremes of outside to inside to calm it down and hydrate. This is a day to day handbag essential for me for the past month.
BUT what I would LOVE to know is what are your skincare essentials to get you through the festive period without turning into a dry, dehydrated, dull, spotty mess?! (Just me that happens to…ok then…)! Let me know if you have any Post Party Skincare SOS favourites of your own!
