Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year (plus giveaway)

Observation one: It is commonly believed that glasses aren’t sexy.

This is a load of croc.

Well, partial croc – some glasses aren’t sexy and there is the perpetuated view that ugly girls wear glasses. Hello… Ugly Betty anyone? As if to prove my point, there is the fact that America Fererra is actually gorgeous – but apparently the simple addition of glasses and braces = ugly (in TV land).

But if you think about it, glasses bring attention to one of the sexiest features on your face – eyes. To make the most of it though it is pretty vital to get both the shape and style of glasses and the make-up right. More on this later. Along with a number of examples of people who look fantastic in glasses.

Observation two: Only smart girls wear glasses.

Well, this might be true – I have a prescription for glasses that I’m constantly procrastinating over, which isn’t very smart as without the glasses I get headaches when I spend too long on a computer, my eyes get tired and I’m probably going to have to spend twice as much as the glasses would cost on botox to sort the lines from my constant squinting… But that’s just me.

Seriously though, when I googled ‘women in glasses’ the following came up…

  • Business woman in glasses
  • Smart women in glasses
  • Mature woman in glasses

It just doesn’t seem right or accurate that women who wear glasses are stereotyped in such a way. Now, I’m not trying to say that it’s bad to be labelled ‘smart’ (or as a business woman, or as mature), it’s not at all.  But they way in which the label is stuck makes it seem like it’s very much an either/or option – you can be EITHER smart (and wear glasses) OR pretty (and not wear glasses) – never both.
This again, is a load of rubbish. For example, Tina Fey. Very pretty, funny AND smart.

On the other end of the scale is Paris Hilton – who needs more than just a pair of glasses to make her look smart.

Observation three: To wear glasses and be sexy you must also wear PVC.

This is clearly not true but a perfect example of going from one extreme to the other. Not to say Kelly Brook doesn’t look good, clearly she does. The same observation goes for kinky secretary costumes and trench coats with nothing underneath.

So there are my observations, and like any good science experiment I will now also draw a conclusion.

My conclusion is that – much like how women can be both mothers and working professionals, glasses wearers can be both pretty and smart AND wear glasses. Oh, and you can also be uber-trendy too – check out mini-fashionista Loudres Leon (Madonna’s daughter) rocking the geek-chic look. As if to mock the idea that choosing frames that flatter is the only option for wearing specs, you can also make a statement.

Of course, there is a bit of a caveat to the looking good in glasses thing – it is important to get the frame colour/size/shape right for your face and to use a few tricks to enhance your eyes and make sure they stand out behind the frames. For example, Tyra Banks – a supermodel in bad glasses… sure, she’s no minger behind the frames, but they hardly do her any favours.

An example of good glasses wearing – I have a friend, Clare, who wears glasses (and contacts) who immediately came to mind when I started to think about what to write this post. This is because she really epitomises being a stylish spectacle wearer – she always has a style of glasses that suits her and knows exactly what to do with make-up to stop her eyes from being overwhelmed by the frames.( It really is all in the lashes when it comes to make-up for spectacle wearers.) By using a bit of soft shading and definition you can create the ideal emphasis on the face’s sexiest feature – the eyes. Then like with a good painting, the glasses just ‘frame’ them, making them look their best. Another example of good glasses wearing – Lisa Loeb. Doesn’t she look gorgeous? But despite the heavy frames, the glasses don’t take over the entire face – they suit it and draw attention to her eyes.

This brings me on to the ultimate point of this post – specsavers are running a competition for ‘Spectacle Wearer of the Year’ (or SWOTY…) and are looking for nominations. I for one plan to nominate my friend Clare (or at try and persuade her to nominate herself). I hope this post might have spurred a bit of inspiration as to how generally fabulous glasses can look, so if you know a glasses-wearer who you think should be up there as one of the stylish spectacle-istas then get nominating!

If you know someone who manages to pull off wearing glasses in a way that blows all the stereotypes out of the water then I suggest you get nominating. Click HERE to put yourself/someone forward for a SWOTY.

As if that wasn’t enough waffle, you could also win a SPEC-tacular (see what I did there…) goody bag worth £200. Including an £150 eye wear voucher, glasses case, glasses repair kit, pen, Andrew Barton hair care products and Simple Health & Beauty skincare products.

To be in with a chance of winning the loot you need to do the following:

1. Leave a comment below
2. Include a way I can contact you (twitter/email)
3. Tell me who you think is the SPECsyest (like sexy, but trying to incorporate the word specs…) spectacles wearer at the moment. This can be a male or female, famous or not. You could even list yourself if you want to!

The rules.

– The give-away is UK only. Sorry!
– It will close 31st July, no comments left after this date will be accepted. This is the same day as the entries for the SWOTY comp close.
– Entry will be picked at random.

Ohh I love wearing glasses. I used to hate them, they just added to my all-over geek not-chic image, but not any more! The person I know who pulls off glasses the best is my friend Leo, definitely the specsiest.

I don’t wear glasses but sometimes, I wish I did!

The person who I know to pull of glasses the best is definitely my sister. When she was younger, she used to hate wearing glasses and that was become my mum always used to choose her some ugly ones that never matched her face shape 🙁 but when she got older and she came into her own mind, she always picked the right ones. And now she just looks more gorgeous in them, than without them.

I’ve been wearing glasses for almost two years now and, although I sometimes replace them with contact lenses, I must confess that nothing in this world makes me feel as specsy as they do…

I am nominating myself for this, of course! *flicks hair* I have thought a few times about getting laser eye surgery, but the thought of giving up my glasses terrifies me! They can be an accessory, a costume…they complete an outfit! Although it would be nice to be able to wake up in the morning and be able to see what time it is..I always feel SPECsy when I’m wearing my cherry red frames!

My friend Natasha is one of the SPECsiest girls I know, especially when she’s rocking her specs! She has amazing style and when she wears her glasses, they just add a finishing touch to whichever outfit she’s wearing.
She has no idea how fab they make her look and always brushes off compliments which I find tres amusing. She spurred me on to finally try on some glasses (which I need as I am actually half blind). Here’s hoping I can pull them off like she can!
