Bye bye Google Friend Connect…

A very sad day in the world of blogging is coming very soon – google is taking away google reader and it’s expected that ‘google friend connect’ won’t be far behind. It was already removed from being used on wordpress or other blogging platforms, but now it’s no longer going to be available on blogger – where my blog is currently hosted.

Why is this a sad thing I hear you ask? Well…let me tell you a few reasons why…

blog lovin 1

Firstly as a blogger who has been blogging for many years, it’s sad to know that the group of loyal readers or community that you have around your blog may sort of vanish. That’s not to say that the lovely folks who subscribe via google reader will stop reading, but the easy to use and familiar google reader/blogger dashboard linked way of keeping up with posts will go.

On a totally selfish note, GFC has always been a nice way to let myself know that there are people out there reading my blog rambles and it’s been really rewarding to see the number gradually tick up over the years.

But, that’s life – as of July GFC will be vanishing. So rather than leave any regular readers high and dry I wanted to share a couple of options on how to keep up with the latest posts AGFC (that’s After Google Friend Connect…)!

First up, the easiest way that I’ve found – and my current way of reading my favourite blogs is BLOGLOVIN. Firstly, it’s really easy to follow and sort your favourite blogs (you can have categories – beauty, fashion, food etc…). Secondly there’s an app for iPhone, iPad and of course there’s the log in on desktop option. Thirdly – it’s also a great way to discover new blogs you may not have stumbled across before (there’s lists, and up and coming rankings – always good to check for new blogs to read).

To subscribe via Bloglovin: A Beauty Junkie in London on bloglovin

blog follow

Beyond bloglovin there are the following options that are all worth considering:

You can get a daily email into your inbox with all the days posts. Because it goes daily, you will need to confirm it and make sure it doesn’t end up in spam – but once that’s sorted once a day an email will arrive with all new posts (if there’s no post – there will be no email).

To sign up for email, just visit the column on the right hand side of the blog and add your email address.

Twitter and Facebook:

Both will include regular updates with links to latest posts (plus a few other bits and bobs, obviously). But this is one of the easiest ways to subscribe. But there is always a chance you might miss the latest – so might not be all that reliable. But the links for these are below:

Twitter: @beautyjunkieldn

Facebook: Beauty Junkie London

Then there’s also google+, google’s latest social media offering and what I think they’re hoping it will become the new GFC option. I have popped the app for this on my blog right next to the GFC box – so if you have a google account it’s an easy one to sign up but personally, it’s not my favourite – not all posts share automatically so some may be missed.

But personally bloglovin is my favourite way to subscribe – as I said, it’s what I use so can vouch for it being easy to keep up with (on the settings I like to set the pictures to large…I do love a nice big picture!)

There are other feed readers out there, but I can’t really recommend as I haven’t used myself.

But either way, as of July google reader will be certainly be vanishing and expect google friend connect wont be far behind – so if that is what you use it’s worth looking into another option that will work for you now! Whatever you go for – thank you so much for reading – it really does mean a lot!

It’s looking to be true – google reader is definitely going. If you try and go to what was previously a google friend connect page it now redirects to google + > think that’s a sign GFC is on it’s way out for sure at some point very soon! x

is there any links or anything from google to say it is?
