Anyone who knows me will know that I am no cook. If you come for dinner at mine you guarantee that I will either make a pasta dish, or pizza – or order take-away (or Ollie will cook). Generally, my cooking skills haven’t developed much since my student days where I lived on a diet of pasta and cereal. So there’s no chance that I will be turning this blog into one interspersed with cooking tips or glossy pictures of all my tasty recipes (you all know how to add milk to cereal right?). But, when approached to talk about food hacks in a post…I decided this was something I could do as whilst I’m no cook (at all) I do have two very simple tricks up my sleeve – one is perfect poached eggs and the other is getting rice just right. Both are ridiculously easy, so wanted to share.
So, for perfect poached eggs all you need is – a pan with boiling water, a cup or mug (doesn’t matter what size), eggs and some cling film.
Yep, that’s right – cling film. That’s the secret. This is of course assuming you don’t already have a egg poaching gadget of some kind…
All you need to do is cut off a bit of cling film, enough that you can lay over the mug and still have extra around the edges when it’s tucked inside. Then you crack the egg you want to poach into the little cling-film bag, twist the extra so you have a little ‘sack’ of raw egg, ready to be lowered into the simmering water. Repeat as many times as you need eggs!
Then when lowered in, let them cook for as long as you would normally, so around 2/3mins for a soft middle. Longer if you prefer it more solid. And pick the edge of the little sack up (this can be lent against the side of the pan gently – then un-wrap and reveal your perfectly poached and nicely kept together egg. Easy!
No, of course this isn’t rocket science – and yes, you do need to be careful with the cling film near the heat/flame – but personally, I find this works a treat if you need to poach a few eggs at the same time. I could also tell you about my guilty pleasure meal of poached eggs with chips… and gravy. But I’ll leave that for another time (it’s far tastier than it sounds, trust me).
For some more food hack inspiration then check out the video below, where Doug shows you a few food hacks to make your life at least 10% better… as this is all about the Co-operative who have partnered with NUS Extra to offer students a discount of 10% (which would have gone down well with me in my student days as the co-op was where I did the majority of my food shopping (the little one on Clarendon Park Road in Leicester if you’re wondering!). You can find out more about the partnership on the Co-op Facebook Page.
I hope my little poached egg trick might make your breakfasts that little easier this weekend – happy cooking!
