For some reason, eye makeup remover is one of those products that I tend to find one I love and then stick with it. I can’t be dealing with trialling ones that just don’t live up to the task (it’s a pretty simple task after all… to remove the makeup) so over the past couple of years I’ve have two basically on rotation – the No7 eye makeup remover which has been a repeat purchase love since all the way back in 2009 and the Clarins eye makeup remover, which shockingly I seem to have not blogged about – but adore. But when my latest bottle of that ran out I decided to reach for something new. So looked into my ‘to test’ pile and found these two – Smashbox Eye Makeup Remover and Neal’s Yard Eye Makeup Remover. So I gave them a trial and found I loved one, and not so much the other.
Now this is probably a bit of a spoiler to point this out, but in case you hadn’t noticed – one of the bottles is already half empty. Indicating it’s been used a fair bit, which is a pretty big clue to which of these is the one I’ve been loving… yes, the Smashbox ‘It’s a wrap!’ waterproof make-up remover is fab. It’s a two layer one, so a mix of different textures (one watery, one oily) to really break down and remove even the toughest waterproof mascara. Simply, this one does the job and removed every last trace without needing to use cotton pad after cotton pad. As I said, when it comes to make-up remover I’m a pretty simple being – I just want it to work. I don’t need any extra fancy claims or promises, I just want it to result in my mascara being removed. That’s it.
Which is why I’ve been left feeling a bit let down by the Neal’s Yard – don’t get me wrong, I wanted to love it – and on the first few uses (I gave it a go with different products) I really enjoyed the ‘experience’. It smells nice (of roses) and doesn’t feel oily on the eye, just quite refreshing and soothing. It really did feel lovely, but I just found that when it came to actually making the mascara budge, it was a touch *too* gentle and left me needing to rub or use tons of product. Basically for me, it didn’t work and whilst there are other Neals Yard products that are lovely to use – this one just doesn’t pass the test unfortunately.
So when it comes to waterproof mascara removal, of these two I can recommend the Smashbox Eye Makeup Remover ahead of the Neals Yard version.
