So the much anticipated MAC Charlotte Olympia collection launched last week and I was very lucky to be invited along to check it out and meet the lady herself. A little about Charlotte – in case you’re maybe not familiar with her work – she’s a designer of shoes and accessories that have are classic with a quirky edge. Think perspex clutch bags with silk pouches and the kitty flats. Charlotte Olympia’s designs have a few iconic features – leopard print, spiders webs and fan designs. All of which have been translated into the MAC Charlotte Olympia Collection.
The collection pretty much embodies the woman herself – who initially made the approach to MAC about doing a collaboration – featuring signature matte red lips. A look she said herself she is never without. Cream colour bases in golden and bronze shades give that glowing healthy skin and accessories (naturally) like lash curlers and make-up bags. This is very much a collection that had me saying ‘I get it’.
From the range the immediate stand out to me were the two Cream Colour Base products, followed by the classic bold red lip products. I have a liner and a lipstick to show you and let’s just say I was pretty blown away by them when I tried. Now, of course I already know that MAC lipsticks are pretty ace. But the combination of liner and lippie just worked to deliver a total POP of red lipstick that bordered on the sort of red I imagine Jessica Rabbit would wear. Proper Hollywood Siren does Cartoon level bright red.
The lipstick is the shade Starlett Scarlet and the liner is called He Said She Said. They’re not a perfect match on first look but actually think they worked well together. The liner is really lovely and smooth and makes me wonder why I haven’t totally leapt on to the MAC lip liner bandwagon before (I have one other!). Then there’s the lipstick – it’s just SO opaque and matte. The colour really is very bright, not for the faint hearted for sure. Yes, it is a matte formula which normally would be a no-no for me and my raisin lips. But for some reason this worked, I think it’s because the colour was SO bold it really covered so even if my lips did go a tad prune like it wasn’t as obvious and they didn’t feel as dry as they can be with the usual MAC Matte lip shades? Not to say it’s any different formula wise, I don’t think it is. I think that the shade just made up for it.
