This week I went along to see Terry Barber – who is basically a legend at MAC present on the makeup trends they’re predicting for next season. I know we’re not even really in full summer yet but for those trend lovers out there I thought it would be fun to share a few of the key themes and looks for both makeup and nails that MAC are predicting will be big.
I’ll go bias and start with one of my favourite looks from the presentation. A nail look – with a twist on the French manicure of a nude base and clear tips.
Nails are long for AW16 a trend you might be already cottoning on to across social media with the Stiletto and Almond shape going strong.
There drop in nail art as a trend continues but not totally vanishing. One of my favourites was the idea of a flash of bling with metallic gold on the underside of long nails so they’re all done and neat on the surface then BOOM – a flash of sparkle underneath.
Beauty wise, there’s a whole load of teenage angst going on. Again with lots of looks that were probably spotted in the 90s/00s – heavy rimmed eyeliner, casually applied paintpog colours around the eye. All giving a bit of a ‘ugh you’re sop embarrassing’ teenage look, but with a touch more attitude. You could even take the trend as far as a painted finger as shown below… Not so sure that one is going to take on quite as mainstream but I love the casually defined eye with lashings of liner.
Another look I loved was the perfectly drawn – and I mean perfectly – dramatic dark glossy lip. With the gloss being a big switch from all the matte that’s going on currently.
There’s also a bit of a two sides of the 70s thing going on – combined in one look in these photos. With pretty pastel washes and tonnes of colour plus the glam rock metallic tears being stuck on the face.
The red lip is being given a softer feel too – great tip and trend to try if you’re maybe a little unsure of a bold red pout. With a softer edge rather than the defined look were used to seeing. Making it a little more casual and less ‘done’.
Overall the key trends are a bit more fun and playful than maybe in recent years. Terry was also pretty keen on the move away from the ‘Kylie Jenner’ type makeup look. Not that he referenced it explicitly but that sort of artificial, overly perfected look that’s oh so popular. I’m with him on this one and happy to see a little variety and excitement in these looks. Bring on the gorgeous natural skin, goodbye dramatic over done contouring and welcome a bit of playfulness.
Which of the looks above jumps out at you as on you might try or take inspiration from?
