Bite Beauty Lip Lab Review

When Zoe and I started planning the details of our trip to New York, one of the things that was immediately top of the list was BEAUTY STUFF. Having spotted that lip brand Bite Beauty have a ‘Bite Beauty Lip Lab’ down in Soho where you could sign up to have a session making your very own custom Bite Beauty Lip Colour we couldn’t have been more excited to book a slot. So on a hot, sunny Saturday we headed to Soho ready to create our own custom lip shades. Following this, I wanted to share my Bite Beauty Lip Lab Review in case you might be looking to book in to create your very own shade.

I have a bit of a ‘thing’ for a bright pink lip. So whilst part of me was tempted to create my ideal nude I decided to go more statement and try and create an ultimate bright pink/fuchsia shade. Zoe, on the other end of the scale went for two shades – a nude and a blue/grey combo that works perfectly with her hair. A shade she can rock like no other – I’ll let her tell you all about it over on her own blog!

But for me, it was ALL about the pink. Brighter the better too.

How the session works – you sit down one on one with a make-up artist, have a quick chat about formulas and shades and then get going. You can go matte or moisturising (I went moisturising) and then get going on mixing shades. Giving your lips a scrub with the amazing Whipped Cherry Lip Scrub (am a sucker for cherry so I love this). You get to try on each shade so you can see how it looks before you decide if you want to tweak it – brighter/darker/cooler or warmer toned. I was actually pretty impressed on the first shade I tried – it was bright and it was pink. But I was keen to try and get it a little brighter without losing any of the intense pink.

Once I had settled on the shade, which was easier than I was expecting. One of my massive weaknesses is making decisions – so the idea of making a custom shade and actually *deciding* on a final option seemed like a long shot. But when I tried that sixth incaration of my lip colour, it was an immediate ‘yes’ moment.

Decision made on colour…more decisions to be made. You don’t just have to decide on the colour, but also the scent and packaging. I went for the almost straight, slanted lid option (from about 5 different choices) and decided to combine two of my favourite scents/flavours of cherry and mint. Just sitting here sniffing my lipstick (as you do) as I tap out the post and can confirm it smells GOOD. Minty cherry goodness. It was a tough shout actually between those and Citrus Mango which also smelt good enough to eat!

It was great to watch the final shade be created too – mixing the pigments in the measures that the make up artist calculated from the swatch and blending. Adding scent and then it’s poured into the mould. Then the mould it left to cool (on a clever device that makes this speedy) before being popped out and inserted into your chosen lip bullet shade. Then ta-da your totally custom created, hand made lip colour is done!

The whole process takes up to an hour – but of course that depends if you want just the one shade or multiple. I opted just for one – which costs $45. If you wanted two of the same shade they do this for an offer price of $60 – but if you want to create two shades (your perfect red and a perfect nude, for example – or even a matte and moisture version of the same shade) these would be $45 each.

If you look at it as one single lipstick, then yes – it’s not the cheapest. But for the whole experience of customising and creating a shade – plus watching this all happen before your eyes,  it was well worth it and I would 100% recommend. The only thing that did surprise me a little is how the MUA team at Bite didn’t seem at all enamoured with the process at all! But I’m sure that must just be down to doing same thing day in, day out! I’m sure if I were creating custom lipsticks all day the novelty would wear off for me too!

I am absolutely delighted with the bright pink shade I created though – now just to match it to a lip liner so I can wear it more often!

If you’re interested to book into the Bite Beauty Lip Lab you can do so via the Bite Beauty Lip Lab site. The slots book up, so make sure you book in advance so you don’t miss out.

I get that this is such a interesting idea and it would be lovely to go through the process but I just end up thinking I could probably find the shade I make somewhere in a lipstick that already exists.

I’m deeply regretting not having done that last time I was in NYC, the entire process sounds lovely, and I have to say I was expecting a higher price! It’s such a shame the staff isn’t very excited by the process anymore, even though, as you said, it’s understandable!

I did this last month in New York too and couldn’t resist making two perfect nudes haha however I really love the shade you created – if I get the chance to go back I will definitely be trying something different. It’s such a nice feeling to have something you made yourself that’s perfect for you 🙂
