I’ve always been brought up believing that less is more, across almost everything when it comes to beauty and fashion. Keeping things simple and uncomplicated is somewhat going against the grain in a world filled with complex contouring routines or skincare that involves 10-plus steps. As much as my beauty addict side wants to try everything in sight, there’s also a part of me that’s naturally more at home with routines (talking both skincare and make-up) that are more on the minimal side. I don’t like to wear too much make-up and like to keep my skincare routines as multi-step-free as I can. Sometimes my beauty junkie side takes over and I find more and more steps being accidentally added, which is often when my skin tends to get a little fed up with me.

Last week I actually had a situation that really reminded me of this, but in a technical way… now bear with me whilst I try and explain this. My macbook was great when I first got it, really fast and always reliable. But overtime I filled it with more and more stuff. I tried to keep it simple but there were just too many files clogging it up. So it started to run slow and flash up with warnings about it being full. It even started to glitch and see the odd spinning wheel of doom. So what I decided to do was a total reset. Not just clear a few files and continue hoping for the best. I decided to go for total wipe and start again. Taking it back to basics if you will. Which is precisely where I wanted to introduce this trial with Avène to you. I’m doing exactly the same thing with my skincare routine and taking it right back to basics and reducing my skincare steps right down and focussing more on what I’m putting on my skin.
Which is where the Eau Thermale Avène comes in. A brand that already has a fantastic reputation for taking care of sensitive skin, has a range called Tolérance EXTRÊME. If you have sensitive skin then you likely already know it. The products originally started life in a set of tiny tubes – as each product didn’t contain any preservatives that might potentially irritate skin. So each one had to be single/small dose sized so it would last once opened. But over time the packaging has been developed and is rather snazzy. There’s a special air-tight opening that allows for product to be dispensed without air getting into the tube and potentially causing the un-preserved skin-friendly ingredients to go ‘off’.
Beyond the packaging, the range has developed to contain just the trio of ingredient groups that your skin needs to stay healthy. With a grand total of just SEVEN ingredients (max) in each product, Eau Thermale Avène have really nailed the whole ‘back to basics’ approach to skincare. With a core of Tolérance EXTRÊME products that are simple, but perfectly effective at the key skincare steps of cleansing and hydrating. Across each product the seven ingredients does vary (of course…or else it would be the same thing in different tubes) but for example, the seven ingredients in the Eau Thermale Avène Tolérance EXTRÊME Cleansing Lotion (launching in Jan 2017) are:
- Avene Thermal Spring Water – clinically proven to the soothing and anti-irritation.
- Glycerin – A plant based moisturising agent that locks in moisture.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – A nourishing but breathable emollient.
- Behenyl Alcohol – Creates a film to protect the skin’s barrier.
- Squalane – A light-weight plant-based moisturising agent.
- Sodim Acrylates – Texturising agent that help a product spread easily and absorb quickly.
- Carbomer – Helps the product spread smoothly.
For this skincare trial I have agreed to reduce my skincare routine to just the ultimate basics of the Tolérance EXTRÊME range. Including the following products:
- Eau Thermale Avène Tolérance EXTRÊME Cleansing Lotion
- Eau Thermale Avène Tolérance EXTRÊME Emulsion (light texture)
- Eau Thermale Avène Tolérance EXTRÊME Cream (rich texture)
- Eau Thermale Avène Tolérance EXTRÊME Mask
With the only exception to these products being to use an SPF of my choice to ensure I have sufficient sun protection during the trial. I am really enjoying how the products are simple but you still have options over texture – so you can choose between an Emulsion formula if you prefer something lighter or the Cream if you prefer a thicker textured product. I’ll be talking more about the individual products in the post-trial blog post. So any questions at all please do let me know.
I have started the trial (I started on 1st August) so I’m well underway and already have some opinions formed on favourite products and how it’s all going, but I’m going to share those for a later post when I’m all the way through the trial. But wanted to introduce you to the idea of taking skincare back to basics and having a bit of a ‘reset’ of my excessive skincare habits!
I’d love to know where you sit on the whole ‘number of steps’ in your personal skincare routine – do you keep it simple with 2/3 steps or are you more of a multi-step with 5 or more?! Let me know in the comments what you think of the idea of back to basics skincare.
