I’ve definitely fallen off the wagon of trying out product after product when it comes to beauty over the last year or so. In some ways this might make for a less interesting blog, but I’m hoping that what it actually means is the products I write about are the real ‘tried and tested’ ones I love and that work for me. Then of course, hopefully work for you if you decide to give them a whirl. In fact, when it comes to skincare I tend to just get on with it and use what I like and it was only when I was taking a look at what was sitting in my current line up that I realised it was very one-brand heavy, that brand being Clarins. One of my all time skincare favourites, especially when it comes to skincare. So with that in mind, it makes sense to take a look at what’s been making the cut and why.
What’s my skin type?
Firstly, it’s worth noting my skin type because I guess that will be most relevant if you’re looking for products that might suit you. My skin is generally fairly balanced, in that I don’t get breakouts. I have more of an issue with dehydration with my ‘problem area’ being around the eyes. So a lot of the skincare products I opt for are either hydration or eye focussed. I can tend to get an oily t-zone over the day, so I try not to get the balance right between hydration and oil control. I tend to go with the approach that it’s easier to use make-up to control oil than it is add hydration through the day… If I was to sum up my skin type on one of those ‘one word’ skin care buzzwords I’d call it combination (but leaning towards dry).
What’s my basic routine?
When it comes to skincare I like to try and keep it as simple and effective as possible. For two reasons, one – I think keeping number of products being used down is a good thing. Two – when it comes to getting ready (for the day or for bed) I don’t want this to be a 45-minute skincare routine process. I want it to be quick so I can get on with my day. I love a pamper as much as the next person, but day to day I want it to be as quick, easy and effective as possible. I like textures that absorb quickly, products that can multi-task or tick a number of boxes at once.
What made the skincare favourites cut?
Overall, my current routine is very Clarins heavy. But there are a few exceptions. Including a couple of more recent discoveries. One being a budget friendly cream cleanser from L’Oreal. The L’Oreal Fine Flowers Cleansing Cream is one I’ve had in my stash a while but only recently tried and I was immediately impressed. A creamy texture that really effectively melts off make-up and rinses away without leaving skin feel like it has any residue, but also leaves it clean and hydrated. Total win for a bargain cleanser and perfect for winter.
Eye make-up remover, I’m down to the last dregs of Charlotte Tilbury Take It All Off eye make-up remover. I love the pump action dispenser and it simply does a great job of budging all my eye make-up.
Then it’s ALL about hydration. I’ve had to cut out retinol products as they’re not recommended in pregnancy. So I’ve just been focusing on keeping my skin as balanced and moisturised as possible. I love the texture of a moisturiser that feels light but still hydrates and the Clarins Hydra Essential is a dream for this. A general all-rounder that just works – but comes in various texture options so you can pick the right fit for you (SPF, normal/combination or dry skin types etc).
My absolute GO TO, swear-by, holy-grail, can’t-live-without, obsessed with…. (you get the picture) skincare product for Winter is the Clarins Blue Orchid Oil. Just the smell alone makes me really happy, but the way it just immediately soothes and hydrates my skin and makes it feel amazing when I leave it overnight. If there was one product from this whole post I would recommend it would be this one. A drop on lips and hands (cuticles) works a treat too. It’s an all rounder and my absolute saviour for colder weather skincare.
Mask wise, my current love is yet ANOTHER Clarins love in the form of the SOS Hydra Mask. You can read a little more about the SOS mask range on my previous post HERE. But this is the one that’s best suited to my skin type at the moment.
For my eyes I have two products that I’m using in combination at the moment. Yes, more Clarins… sensing the theme? Clarins Super Restorative Total Eye Care – a cream texture, absorbs straight away and smoothes and hyrdates. I’ve also added a serum into the mix for a daily boost of my most dehydrated area. The new addition is the Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Eye Serum – a light serum that is a proper POW of moisture. I tend to apply this first, then all over moisturiser and then the Clarins eye cream. With SPF on top (currently using Ultrasun SPF 50 Face – not shown in pics).
I have also thrown another older favourite into the mix. The Caudalie Eau De Beaute Beauty Water Spray – one of those products I can’t quite explain why I love it, but I do. It’s refreshing, smells good and just feels good to use. So even if it’s definitely not an essential… it just feels good and that’s reason enough for me!
So all in all? It’s safe to say I’m a tad obsessed with Clarins for skincare. I should note it’s definitely a brand I go to without thinking – it’s a brand I trust and feel I can 100% rely on for results that suit my skin type.
An ode to my love for Clarins if you will… is there a skincare brand that you absolute love and swear by? Would love to know which ones you turn to time and time again?
