It’s been a funny old year 2020, how casual does that sound?! How very British, remarking on a year with a global pandemic as if it’s a spot of inconvenient rain… However, I note the funny year purely because today has been a reminder of little milestones that add the punctuation to my life and work in the beauty world. Jo Malone events are definitely a little marker as I go through the year, the Spring launches, the big September launch (this one) and of course the Christmas reveal. Nobody does an event like Jo Malone do, they are really magical and whilst they’re of course not an essential – they are an absolute joy and a missed part of life as a result of the current circumstances.

Which is why today’s Zoom event to launch the two new fragrances that make up the Jo Malone Lost In Wonder collection felt like a little piece of that life. In a positive way. Sure, I was sat at my desk but listening to the team tell us about the fragrance and taking part in a little crafty activity to create my own little DIY Lotus Flower. It felt like a moment of escape and helped bring the fragrances to life.
So enough with the emotive nostalgia, and back to the fragrances. For this collection there is a duo of scents. For the first time combining a classic cologne and a cologne intense (the black bottle). As the name implies the cologne intense are the headier of the fragrances and often tend to lean towards woody or out type of notes. Vetiver is a featured note in the fig cologne too, a scent that’s typically considered a more masculine note but one I love and definitely find myself drawn to.

The top note is cypress, heart note of grapevine and the base is moss. It’s a combination of woody and earthy notes and it has a definite masculine side to it but one of my favourite things about the Jo Malone fragrances is how they are unisex and you just go for the ones that work for you.
The other thing I love is how a fragrance can also be totally transformed by combining it with another scent… which is where the other pairing fragrance comes in.
With top notes of Fig leaf, a heart note of Lotus Flower and a base note of Vetiver. Fig is typically a sweet/juicy type of scent but taking the fig leaf and combining with the vetiver it keeps this scent on the fresher/brighter side rather than overly sweet. Especially when the vetiver combines – it really lightens it all up. It’s a special one! I wouldn’t necessarily describe as a typical fig fragrance, but if it’s a note you favour then definitely try it and see what you think.
The thing I really enjoy about this collection is how it doesn’t have a distinct seasonal side to it. Typically certain Jo Malone scents feel like they are ideal for certain seasons – Pomegranate Noir is a Winter scent, Blackberry and Bay is Autumn, Peony and Blush Suede is Spring… and so on! But this combination is easily a year round fragrance, either individually or in combination.
The combination is certainly a little spark of magic. It magically lifts the notes and takes them somewhere new. Of course you’re not limited to only combining with the two, you can layer and combine all you like – apparently Wood Sage and Sea Salt is a dreamy combination too.
