I don’t seem to like to do things by halves. I go for months with the most exercise I do being a slight jog to catch the bus when late for work. Now, in the past couple of weeks I’ve gone from nothing to yoga and an insane boot camp courtesy of Hollywood Celeb favourite, that’s recently opened in London…
By boot camp I don’t just mean the odd work out session, I mean that I am signed up to a thing they call ‘The Academy’. The Academy is a month long version of their boot camp – where instead of a selection of classes it’s intense – Monday to Friday for the whole month. At the same time every day, without fail.
The time I went for? 7.10am… ouch.
Well, actually now being a week in I can say it’s not as ouch as I thought. I actually quite like the early morning work out factor – best thing being that once the class is over, I’m done. No having to fit it in around things or juggle, just a consistent daily routine and a much appreciated break at the weekend. Plus the early class means I just get up, throw on my gym gear and go. No need to get ready and then get sweaty and then get ready again…
The classes? No lie, they are the most intense work out I have ever had. I actually found myself grunting during one of the gym sessions. Grunting?! I’m not a grunter!
They classes are generally split into two – part cardio, high intensity interval training (HIIT). Which in my language means running bloody fast on a treadmill. Sometimes working bloody fast on a steep incline on a treadmill. Then a session of weights – with a different focus each day (arms, legs, abs, full body…).
Prior to these classes I have been for a grand total of three runs in my life. I am not a runner – it’s my least favourite form of exercise but I can already see such a huge increase in how fast I can run and how long for. Day one my fastest speed was 7.5, by day six I ran at 10.0. I’m impressed by how much I’ve improved in a short time.
I’m really interested to see how this impacts my body overall – I’ve taken measurements of weight, body fat percentage (and BMI) at the beginning and will be reporting back on how it’s going. My first impressions are impressed with how speedy my fitness feels like it’s improving – if you’re looking for a fitness kick up the bum for a fitness routine… then you can guarantee this will be for you.
Will report back and let you know how it’s all going in a couple of weeks. Wish me luck!
