Lancome Hypnose Star is my current favourite mascara – it’s the one I compare the others that I test to and see how to stack up. Lancome really do amazing mascara – if you haven’t tried, you should! But this post isn’t about the Hypnose Star mascara, but one of the new palettes that have recently launched to compliment the Lancome mascara ‘wardrobe’ – with a rainbow of colour variants there are three palette families to choose from, each with a matching mascara, there’s Hypnose Star, Hypnose Doll Eyes and Hypnose Drama. This palette ‘Gris Fume’ is from the Hypnose Star selection and is rather pretty!
Each palette comes with a little how-to guide with step by step instructions to create each eye look that ‘matches’ the mascara – essentially breaking down into Hypnose Doll Eyes being a rounded style of smokey eye, Hypnose Star is the almond like shape and Hypnose Drama being the more dramatic, stronger colour smokey look.
For a smokey eye I have to say this palette is ideal – the colours are smokey/greys but with a nice hint of warmth to them – that taupe shade (swatched on far right) is a beauty. The warmth keeps the grey shades on the flattering rather than draining side and makes the colour far easier to work with.
The darker shades are pigmented, but not overly so – which makes them easier to build into the desired smokey look. It’s all too easy to think of high pigment levels being the number one criteria for a product, when actually having the ability to layer things makes them easier to use.
The two paler shades are shimmery without being glittery but do swatch very similar – one of them has a slightly rosey shimmery to it that is almost impossible for me to pick up on camera but this one (it’s the larger one on the right in the palette and swatched on the left) is a lovely highlight where the smaller pale shade is the ideal base colour for all over.
For me, I am mostly happy that the taupe shade is the largest as I love this – I do struggle to resist the lure of a good old fashioned taupe eyeshadow! This is the shade that makes this palette special – it’s the one that takes it from fairly standard smokey eye selection into something far more wearable and versatile.
