So if you’re even remotely interested in beauty, then there’s a high chance you have already heard the buzz that the Benefit ‘They’re Real’ family is growing – with two new additions. Firstly, the biggest story is the Benefit ‘Push-Up Liner’ (see what they did there, the cheeky minxes…). The Benefit They’re Real Eyeliner is a gel formula, but in a snazzy little pen that claims to make applying eye-liner a breeze. It’s all housed within a pen/nib that may look simple but had clever little features to make it work really well. The other new addition to the They’re Real family is the new Remover – which feels very fancy for an eye make-up remover – but BOY is this stuff the bee’s knees. It’s a tough one to properly demonstrate, I have considered making a little video on it to show it in action – but take my word for it, that mascara that wouldn’t budge before? Comes off much easier than before.
But eye make-up remover aside, the main exciting point of the liner is that it’s all the dark liner goodness of a gel, but with the easy of application of a pen. The three swipes I’ve shown above are from one ‘dose’ essentially – the first swipe does have a bit of a gloopy bit, so I’d usually give it a bit of a wipe before applying but then (as you can hopefully see from the other lines) you’re good to go for a whole lot of even, black, lining-action.
The nib has a few special features – it’s flexible and rubbery to no pulling or scratching on the lid when you apply. It’s angled so it’s very smooth and avoids dragging the skin. Then it has these little angle/’shelf’ sort of bits that are meant to protect the lashes, or move them out of the way as you apply. At the launch event I was told you are meant to be able to apply with a single hand (i.e. no-need to hold your lid down as you normally would…) I’m not so sure about this, as snazzy as the nib is – for my own eye (maybe it’s just my eyesight?!) I still feel the need to hold lashes out of the way.
The other big claim of the liner is that it stays put through anything. At the launch I had this applied (well, I did one eye and one of the lovely Benefit girls did the other) and then I headed to the gym – it wasn’t planned, was just how my day was working out. But it actually was a pretty good chance to really put it through it’s paces (FYI – I don’t normally wear make-up to the gym) in a hot/sweaty environment. It held up ok, but there was a bit of smudging on to my top lid (totally should have taken a photo, was probably too busy trying not to die post-class). It was a pretty extreme sort of situation, it held up ok – but wasn’t flawless at the end of the class. Having said that, I don’t really know what another liner would have looked like at the end of the class either?! I suspect it wouldn’t be pretty…
As far as liner launches go, I do love that this makes gel liner easier – as it’s never really been my thing to be able to apply it well. But on the other hand, that’s probably because I don’t tend to wear the more solid liner look all that often. For me, I’m mostly excited about the make-up remover – as this stuff really does get a big thumbs up from me at removing stubborn eye make-up! Yes, you want it to last…but you also want to be able to get it off!
