A good manicure really does come down to the prep and care products as much, if not more so than the colour. A crappy nail varnish can be made ten times better looking with a decent base and top coat. Or an amazing nail varnish can barely last a day when combined with a rubbish one. Which is why this Butter London Nail Care Trio have won me over…
Firstly, on a totally shallow note. The packaging is pretty – simple and stylish and the square size fits *perfectly* in my little desk mani pot thingy from Muji. Perfect. But that’s not really what I should judge them on. The trio include the Nail Foundation (aka Base Coat), Hardwear (aka Topcoat) and Handbag Holiday (aka Cuticle Oil). The stand out for me is the Nail Foundation – which is really great as a base coat. Or even if you’re going for a nude nail look and just want your nails to have that slight bit of perfecting. Like the tinted moisturiser equivalent of base coats. It evens out colour, smooths the nail surface and dries matte to create a nice base for the nail colour to be applied on top of.
The Hardwear is a good top coat, dries fairly quickly and leaves a glossy shine behind – but I’m afraid it doesn’t quite beat the infamous Seche Vite for top coat brownie points in my book. Then there’s the Handbag Holiday – which is a lovely cuticle oil but one I’d use at night (as with all cuticle oils) as they’re just a touch too messy for day in my opinion. I tend to opt for cream or pen applicators for day – but for a ‘proper’ manicure or at night – this is a dream. In the Butter London nail care range they also have ‘Melt Away’ a cuticle remover or ‘Horse Power’ nail fertiliser… so a whole manner of nail care from a brand I previously only thought of for colour (and cheeky shade names).
For me though, the stand out of the trio is hands down (no pun intended) the Nail Foundation. Love it.
