Benefit have added a new addition to the They’re Real mascara family – in the form of a Benefit They’re Real Tinted Primer. A brown tinted pre-mascara (or day time/subtle alternative) lash length-giver. So to see if this additional product/step is worth it I have a before (bare lashes), primer, and primer and mascara shot to compare how effective each step is.
Comparing the two wands and formula shades above you can see that the Tinted Primer (silver tube) is a brown shade and a finer brush. The They’re Real Mascara is a dark black formula and on a slightly larger brush with thicker bristles. It’s worth considering I have quite fine lashes, with blonder tips and darker roots.
Take a peek at the three super-close eyelash shots to show the before (bare lashes), tinted primer only, and primer plus They’re Real mascara on top shot.
I think the layering of each one really does give a little something extra. The primer gives a subtle tint and a little added definition by making sure my pale lashes have some colour right to the natural tip. It’s very much a natural tint rather than a coating of colour – it doesn’t add volume or make the lashes look thicker.
The big question being, what’s the benefit (no pun intended) of having a Tinted Primer. Well, one benefit is if you do really want a subtle/natural look then this is great – as most mascaras these days promises drama/false lash effect and the like. Then if you want a subtle look, a tinted primer is the way forward. IF however, you want the false lash effect the primer is probably a step too far and you would be better off with a really ace mascara alone and then add a few single false lashes if you really want to dial it up.
The Benefit They’re Real Tinted Primer * isn’t available yet BUT you can get your own tester via a free sample with December Elle Magazine.

Great review!! I was just wondering if you think the They’re Real mascara is better with or without the primer in general?
