So we have lived in our new home for about four months now, and it’s amazing how time has flown past. It was quite a change, from a flat to a house. The new place is a lot more spacious than the Angel flat and as much as I miss the area, the new house is very much home. I’m actually amazed how much it’s already come together to look like we’ve been living here for a lot longer than we have. It’s going to take a long time to get all the little details sorted and the whole place ‘done’ but the one room that’s probably closest to that ‘finished’ state is the living room so I thought I’d snap a few photos to show you and share a bit of my home obsession – something I’m really keen to bring to the blog more in 2016.
One thing that’s been a touch of a challenge with starting to decorate is trying to tear myself away from the colour I’m naturally drawn to – turquoise or mint. Whilst white and grey will pretty much be the base for the whole house, I really want to bring in some other colour touches but also want to avoid looking too ‘matchy’ so choosing a colour but then going for all sorts of variations of that colour in the room. The living room is a pretty good example, I think with blue as the colour but going for a range of shades/tones within the blue family – touching on a bit of teal too. Trying to make it warm and cosy – which with blue, white and grey I wasn’t sure would work as they’re naturally fairly cool shades.
One of the things that gave the real finishing touch for the whole room was a gorgeous trio of prints * from the amazing minted.com – a site you NEED to check out if you’re looking for gorgeous, unique prints. I can’t even explain how long I’ve spent browsing the site looking at all the gorgeous art on sale there. The way it works is as an online marketplace, connecting independent artists from all over the world – sourcing it’s pieces through on-going art competitions!
When you find a piece you like, you can then select from a range of sizes, if you want to add the artist signature (I chose to) and you have the option to choose a frame – or just order the stand alone print – and then get it shipped. The shipping was impressively quick and perfectly packaged too. I really like how minted.com do do their sizing – they don’t just list the measurements, they show each image in the context of a person holding the print so you really get a perspective feel for it, a small detail but makes a big difference when you’re picturing the art work and selecting the size that works best. Seriously cannot fault it at all.
The three minted.com prints * I chose are all from different artists but I shopped by colour and made a shortlist of around 8/9 that I liked then narrowed it down to three. The one on the right with the swirls and teal shades was the one I spotted and fell for first – you know when you see something and and it just grabs you? Well, this is one of those things – I’m so happy with them.
As for the other details, a little run down. The sofas (well, sofa and snuggle chair) are both French Connection at DFS. The pale grey large sofa is the Quartz range and the snuggle chair is Zinc. I opted against going for all matching sofas/chairs. There’s also a single arm chair from Next that’s not shown in these photos that’s a dark grey colour. The ‘soft furnishings’ are from a whole bunch of places. The multi shade blue and white throw is from The Range, as is the zig-zag pillow next to it. On the main sofa the large teal pillow covers are Ikea, the grey knitted pillow is House of Fraser and the black and white print is Ikea – as is the sheepskin rug thing on the sofa, that’s used as the spot where Monty tends to sit…to avoid getting dog hair all over the sofa…
The dark blue knitted throw over the back of the sofa was one I found in Sainsbury’s. The dark wood end tables are both French Connection Home (bit of an accidental theme happening here?!) and were wedding gifts. The glass base lamp is Laura Ashley. The two white vases on the side table both came from Tiger (a couple of years ago) and the blue coaster thingies are ones I found in my childhood bedroom over Christmas as think I bought them on a school trip… who knew they would come in handy?!
Overall, I’m pretty happy with the room as it is – it just needs a few final tweaks I think. A couple of them are pretty major – we’re going to get wooden floors put down at some point in the next few months. Who knew wooden flooring cost such a crazy amount?! At the same time we will repaint the room white as at the moment it’s an off-white magnolia shade that isn’t offensive, but I’m not keen. I also want to switch out the curtains, the ones here are from ASDA Home (a bargain) and I like them, but I’m going to move these into my office and get some new ones for the living room. I’ve spotted some from West Elm that I love, or perhaps going to check out John Lewis. I’m not really an experience curtain-shopper so not 100% what I’m looking for. Once that’s all done I think there will just be a few final things – a plant or two here and there, a large cosy rug and possibly some new end tables for around the sofa.
Who am I kidding, I don’t think a room is ever totally ‘done’!? I’ll always be tinkering and changing things! But there we have a little peek at the room as it is now – let me know what you think as I really enjoy writing/photographing home stuff, I just need to really work out how I’m going to do it on a regular basis. I’m thinking it might work well for videos too perhaps?! Let me know if it’s something you’re interested in and I’ll see what I can do! But there we have a little peek at my living room and how we have decorated it – so far!
