Inspired by Iris Apfel #DrivenByStyle | AD

When it comes to style, it’s all too often that you read about the ‘rules’. The articles about ‘how to wear’ or ‘wardrobe essentials everyone must have’. The thing about style and fashion is that it’s actually meant to be fun – and in general rules and fun aren’t always things that go hand in hand.

When it comes to fashion and fun there’s one name that definitely DOES go hand in hand. Iris Apfel – she is a style icon in every sense of the word. From her style to attitude. For me, it’s her attitude that fills me with warm fuzzy feelings.

Iris Apfel is the new face of the DS 3 – an awesome car from the premium Parisian car brand DS Automobiles. The coolest thing about the DS 3 is that it has a tonne of ways you can customise it so it’s a little vehicle version of your personality. I have to say I LOVE that Iris Apfel is their face. A car that clearly sits in the ‘young, cool’ target market having someone who is 94 and a million times cooler than I could ever dream of being.

Of course Iris Apfel is known for her colourful, eclectic style and of course her signature glasses. But there are a few style words of wisdom that I think can apply to everyone regardless of your personal taste being print-on-print-on-print or if you’re more of a jeans and t-shirt sort of person. It doesn’t matter – personal style is exactly that. Totally personal.

A few of my favourite Iris words of wisdom:

“If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything.”

“I don’t dress to be stared at, I dress for me.”

“Life is grey and dull; You might as well have a little fun when you dress.”

“It’s better to be happy than well dressed.”

“I don’t have any rules, because I’d only be breaking them.”

So last Friday I headed down to the DS space at Westfield Shepherd Bush to check out the new DS 3 – including the seriously amazing Performance Model…which looked amazing – all matte black with gold details. VERY cool. As part of visiting the space and checking out just a small selection of the different design versions of the DS 3 I was also challenged with a one hour shopping challenge. With £100 of vouchers to shop Westfield and put a little dose or Apfel into my own wardrobe. NOT as easy as you would think. Sure, I had the mock-Apfel glasses… but then how was I going to add a little splash of Apfel to style that was still mine. So I decided to shop for items that were my typical style but with a little twist of fun.

That’s the thing I want to learn from her attitude is that how you dress is all about having fun, dressing for you and not sticking to any of the cliche ‘rules’ of fashion. I love the whole idea of dressing for who you want to be that day – another of her famous quotes – and something I feel like I do. Sometimes I feel smart and lady like, other times I want to wear trainers and a jumper, other times more preppy… I like to choose what I wear depending on how I feel that day. I’d never be one to pre-plan outfits, as it just wouldn’t work as it wouldn’t necessarily be how I felt in the moment!

As for the bits I picked up on the hour of Apfel-inspired shopping challenge… I went to two of my budget shopping favourites, H&M and New Look and picked up a couple of things from each. So excluding shoes I technically got TWO outfits…  I went for jeans as a staple – as in the ad Iris mentions how she was ‘probably one of the first women to wear jeans’ so it seemed pretty appropriate. But to switch things up I got one pair of standard skinnies and another pair of flared style to try and break out of my skinny jeans rut. Then, I decided to go for a bit of fun and embody that playful Iris attitude. So I chose a bold giant polka dot print navy blouse from New Look (that was in the sale, score) and a striped t-shirt from H&M with a cute little cartoon cactus embroidered patch on it. Just a touch of Apfel fun, whilst sticking to my own personal style… and I couldn’t resist adding the Iris inspired glasses from the Westfield event too…

What I’d like to know is what influences your style and how you dress? Where do you get your inspiration from and what makes a difference to how you feel in what you wear?

For me… I’ve decided I want my style to have a little more Apfel in it day to day. Excellent choice of ambassador DS.
