It seems a little ridiculous to be typing this on a day that feels more like Winter than Summer, but there we go. Maybe I’ll write this in the hope that sending some positive vibes out there will make a few warmer/drier days come back to the UK. No overall complaints though, I don’t think it’s been too bad so far BUT I digress. This post isn’t meant to be about typically British generic weather chat – it’s about a selection of fragrance and body products I’ve been playing with lately that really do nail that whole ‘Summer Scent’ thing. From the cliche coconuts to perfect pineapple (I do love a little alliteration) here’s a round up of some scents to get you in the Summer mood, regardless of what the weather is doing.
Mandara Spa Ylang Ylang & Coconut Body Butter * (£5 Sainsburys) – I’ll be honest and say I don’t love the packaging of this one, it’s a bit 70’s wallpaper for my taste. But the smell is SO good. It’s actually one of two Summer scented body butters, but this was the one that instantly won me over. The combination of Ylang Ylang and Coconut gives the coconut a bit of a floral twist that reminds me of holidays, applying aftersun whilst you can smell tropical flowers around that give off that gorgeous evening scent.
The Body Shop Pinita Colada Range * (from £5 The Body Shop) – I’m sure you have already seen this range popping up left right and centre and for good reason. No, not because they’re sponsoring bloggers (or if they are, I’m not one of them!) but because it smells like a fresh Pina Colada cocktail. When I say fresh I mean in a zingy, tropical way – not in a sticky/sugary way. I know, totally cliche, but these smell good enough to eat. I think anyone would struggle not to have at least a little it of a smile on their face using something that smells like Pina Colada in their morning shower. Shown here are the Shower Gel and Body Butter – there’s also a scrub.
The Body Shop Polynesian Island Tiare * (£18 The Body Shop)- This little fragrance arrived in a box along with the Pinita Colada bits and on giving it a spritz I instantly knew I had to include in the post with these others. It’s another one that really captures that combination of tropical/sea water. Another one with some Ylang Ylang in it, combined with the Tiare flower. It’s fresh, light and very holiday-perfect. Or to give that ‘fake holiday’ feel, if you’re maybe not jetting of the Polynesian Islands anytime soon…
Avon Tahitian Holiday * (Currently £4.50 Avon.uk.com) – Bit of French Polynesian theme going on here. Maybe I am just dreaming about a picture-perfect holiday destination. But sometimes an inspired scent will just have to make do. This is another one that one spray and I loved it. I am a sucker for a Summer scent. It has a lot of simular notes to The Body Shop version – with some added warming ginger and monoi oil. Best thing though, the price – it’s listed at just £4.50 at the moment (reduced price so may not always be as cheap) but how good is that? Perfect if you want a one-hit fragrance for a holiday where you maybe won’t feel heartbroken to leave behind if you need to get under a luggage weight limit. Plus it means you don’t need to feel bad for being liberal with it and spritzing it all over.
Calvin Klein CK One Summer * (£33 Boots) – Maybe it’s the palm prints, maybe it’s the whiff of nostalgia that CK One will always give me. Maybe it’s just that this one captures that ‘beach towel dried in the sun’ fragrance that I love SO much. I don’t know – but this is an instant spritz of something Summery. This one confuses me a bit because in many ways it reminds me of CK One and in others it smells totally different. There’s something more fresh/green about it – there’s a lot of lemon/lime in there along with the ‘typical’ summer favourites of Coconut and the Tiare flower that’s becoming a bit of a Summer staple for me. The Lemon and Lime are pretty signature light and easy to wear notes from the CK One brand overall, so it’s nice to see them come through with the added scents of summer in there to mix it up.
It really would be tough to choose a favourite from this bunch, but think it might actually have to be the cheap and cheerful Avon offering! It smells so good and for just £4.50 who can complain?! All in all, I think anyone who has ‘enjoyed’ the rainy day London and the South of the UK has seen today could do with a little spritz of Summer!
