Protecting your skin from the city with Jurlique

One of the biggest things I’ve learned about skincare over the years I’ve been a blogger is how it’s not a one-size fits all thing. What works and suits one person will not be that dream routine for someone else. Sure, there are products that are pretty universal but then there are those that are perfectly suited for certain skin types or lifestyles. One of the big lifestyle factors that’s so easy to overlook in skincare is city living and how city living skincare is definitely a thing you need to consider.

Having lived in and on the outskirts of London for over a decade, I am pretty well used to the joys of London pollution. The joys of ‘tube nose’ is all you need to realise just how gross London air can be (blow your nose into a tissue after a day in London and you will just see…). I know, it’s gross – but if there’s one way to really drive home how you need to protect your skin from the pollution that is part and parcel of living in a city then this is it.

There are a few key ways you can adapt your skincare routine to make sure you’re looking after it and protecting as best you can against environmental aggressors. The first thing is to make sure you’re really thoroughly cleansing your skin. Regardless of wearing makeup or not, a double cleanse is a must if you’re someone who spends time in a city. Even if you’re not, a thorough cleanse really is a double step I recommend regardless, because to be honest here – we all want to know how to remove dirt and pollution from our face.

My preferred textures for a two step cleanse are an oil followed by a gentle cream cleanser. This may or may not be one that foams, this is down to personal preference. Jurlique have a beautifully textured Nourishing Oil Cleanser that is a dream for disolving any dirt or makeup and removing effectively from the face. I would then follow this with a second cleanse, you can use the Jurlique Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser to really make sure your skin is clear of all of the dirt of the day. It smells beautifully of rose and has a light whipped like texture. The foaming effect is only when mixed with water my tip is use on dry or damp skin and only add water as the removal process to make sure you’re getting the full hydrating benefits.

One of the other key environmental effects on skin that you will want to protect yourself from – regardless of where in the world you are – is the sun. The message is pretty familiar these days, but SPF really is a daily thing. Not just something for holiday sand tropical climates. Jurlique have a great high factor UV Defence Lotion with SPF50 yet still a light and oil free texture. It’s key to always remember to apply the SPF product at least 20 minutes before sun exposure to really get the full benefits. Plus don’t forget your neck and décolletage are when applying too.

Life is already busy enough without an overly complicated skincare routine. However there are a couple of extra simple steps you can take in addition to a thorough cleansing routine and using a daily SPF to protect from the damaging effect of pollution and free radicals found in the environment – especially in urban areas. Using products that contain antioxidants to protect from these factors is a great thing to do. But this doesn’t have to mean another new product or another new step. It can just be looking for those key ingredients in the products you would have in your routine anyway effectively giving you antipollution skincare within. product you already know and love. For example the Jurlique Moisture Plus Rare Rose line includes a cream, lotion and serum all containing powerful natural ingredients such as Tumeric, Grapeseed and Green Tea. The Rare Rose Serum is my favourite product from the brand overall and is a real pleasure to use with it’s soft rose scent and fresh but hydrating texture.
