This post should probably be called the Saturday night that never was… as the face of make-up I put on never got to be seen outside of my flat walls in the end! I was all set to go out, but then one thing led to another and I decided to stay in rather than going out for drinks with the girls in Angel as had been planned. But I took a few snaps when I was all ready to go so despite this fact I thought I’d share them on here as the look was a bit different to what I usually wear and I used the night as a chance to play with a few new products… as well as my purchases from the RiRi Hearts MAC collection…
The look started with testing out the new Bourjois Happy Light Foundation* – a new one from them that is designed to ‘correct without masking’ and offer a ‘luminous and radiant complexion in any light’ – I’m very impressed with it. It’s light and creamy, one pump for me covered my whole face – it blends in really easily and I love the finish. It’s glowy without a hint of shimmer or looking greasy. I used shade Vanille Rose (51) and it was a great match for my already-pale-for-winter skin!
I decided to have a bit of a play with contouring – a skill I’ve never quite mastered but would love to get the hang of. So I pulled out my favourite product for this – Daniel Sandler’s Sculpt and slim-effect contouring face powder*. It contains a matte bronzer shade and a pale glow-giving highlighter (that I went to town with…) I started by using a flat powder brush to apply the bronzer shade in places where I wanted to give the shadow effect – under the cheek bones, side of nose etc. Then blended out and added the highlighter to the tops of cheeks, bridge of nose. I absolutely adore this little compact pretty much for the highlighter alone, it’s such a silky smooth powder with glow but not glitter.
I then pulled out the two RiRi Hearts MAC products I mentioned earlier this week and gave the blusher another go – I’m not sure it really suits me but decided to give it another whirl anyway. I’m still not convinced it’s one for me, but I didn’t hate the overall look as it just added that little extra pop of colour on the cheeks.
For the eyes I first applied a coat of Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer* – my current shadow primer of choice. Then I used two shades from the Her Cocoa – using the shimmering champagne colour all over the lid and the mid toned brown for a little extra definition. I also added a little of the darker shade just under the lower lash line for a slightly smokey eye. I then used a swipe of the Max Factor Wild Mega Volume Mascara* on the lashes – it was the first time I used this one too and first impressions were really good. It was easy to use, the slightly unusual hourglass wand shape worked well to help reach the inner corners and it layered really easily without clumping.
For the lips I couldn’t decide between going pale and simple or darker and more dramatic at first, in the end taking snaps of both to help me decide and resulting in going with a new shade from Aveda – their ‘Rehydrating Lip Glaze’ in the shade ‘Winterberry’* – a deep plum with a hint of that pinky/blue shimmer to it. This gloss is gorgeous to apply and wear – it’s thick but not sticky and so pigmented it almost feels like a really hydrating lipstick to wear rather than a typical gloss. Plus it has a bit of a minty/tingle to it that feels refreshing! Colour wise, this is different for me as I usually opt for bright pinks or reds for nights out if I’m going for a darker lip – but I actually really like the shade and it’s nice to break out of your comfort zone! Plus a gloss is easier to re-apply on a night out so there’s less thinking about touching up!
So despite this look never actually making it to Upper Street, here’s my look for a Saturday Night!
