InStyle Magazine’s annual Best Beauty Buys awards highlight each years’ best performers in each of the various categories, with many a familiar product popping up time and time again. The awards are based on votes from 105 industry experts including more names than I can list but it’s basically a list of the whos-who of make-up artists, hair stylists, tanners, facialists, threaders and beyond.
The awards are broken up into categories so there’s skin, make-up, body and hair. With each one having it’s own sub-categories. I have a selection of the winning products that I have been testing lately (or are products I’m already familiar with) so thought a round up of mini reviews would be a nice way to cover off the John Lewis InStyle Best Beauty Buys 2015 from this beauty junkie’s perspective.
Laura Mercier Mineral Foundation Primer – Best Primer
Always a classic primer. Pops up time and time again in awards, I feel like a tube of this is never far away in my beauty life. It’s one I like to use when my skin is balanced, but do opt for more hydrating primers at other times purely to suit my very dry skin! But no denying this is a classic for a reason. Good if you have pretty balanced skin and just want a bit of smoothing out prep before you apply your base.
Origins No Puffery Cooling Roll On for Puffy Eyes – Best Eye Depuffer
There’s nothing nicer than the cool rollerball feeling of this when you have puffy eyes. If you ever have a bit of a cry and want to hide the evidence than this is a handy one to have around! Refreshing and cooling without being at risk of messing up your make-up so can apply over the top or underneath.
Origins Super Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel – Best Spot Treatment
I actually said ‘YES’ out loud when I saw this in the box – an absolute go-to for break outs for me. As I don’t tend to get mass breakouts any more just the odd spot and this is ideal for kicking it as quickly as possible. Just a dab of product on a cotton bud as regularly as possible and it goes down in no time. This is one the boy is always asking after too if he ever gets spots. So two thumbs up from me and the boy on this one.
Organic Pharmacy Travel Kit – Best Eco/Organic Range
I actually haven’t tried much from Organic Pharmacy so I was keen to give this travel kit of some of the favourites a whirl with my favourite of the travel bits actually being the Herbal Toner which is lovely and refreshing, but not drying and smells lovely. The carrot butter cleanser was an absolute dream to use for my dry skin too.
Guerlain Terracotta Moisturising Bronzing Powder 01 – Best Bronzing Powder
A first try for me – I am always a little tentative with bronzers as when you’re pale it’s all too easy to go totally overboard and look a tad muddy. The shade of this is true Terracotta Bronzer and whilst it looks lovely, I do think when I have a bit more colour it will look really special. But I can certainly see why this is hailed as such a favourite.
REN Moroccan Rose Otto Body Wash – Best Shower Gel
I’ve used the bath oil in this range but not the shower gel. The same familiar rich rose scent, but in a more day to day beauty product. I didn’t used to love rose scents but the oil and now this shower gel has started to bring me around. Whilst I find rose a little too heady for me to wear as a fragrance, I do like using it in bath and body products. For this one I think it really will come down to if you like rose or not.
Elemis Frangipani Monoi Body Oil – Best Body Oil
If there’s ever a scent to capture the scent of luxe Summer holiday dreams then it has to be this from Elemis. I do like a body oil, particularly at this time of year when your body has been hidden under layers for the colder months and you want to get them looking better quickly – a body oil can be the wonder product for dry skin. My only bug bear is the application/bottle is a bit messy – gorgeous, yes – but I am prone to pouring it all over the bathroom.
Lancome Hypnose Mascara – Best Mascara
Lancome do the best mascara in my opinion, whilst the Hypnose Star is my all time favourite and one I have a back up of at all times. I can wholeheartedly get on board with Lancome being voted Best Mascara and there’s bound to be something in the Hypnose Family to suit what you want and how you like your brush to be.
Dermalogica Daily Microfoiant – Best Facial Exfoliator
This brings back memories of my early days in blogging! It was one of the first products I was sent as a sample to try and I absolutely treasured every last drop. Using the smallest possible amounts and wanting it to last as long as possible. If you haven’t used a powder exfoliator before it might be a bit odd at first. But it’s one where you pour a little powder, mix into a paste with a little water and scrub on your face. It also reminds me of teenage attempts to make home made face masks with oatmeal as it has that oaty fragrance to it. As a gentle exfoliator it’s lovely – if a little bit of a faffy with the powder/water/paste mixing process.
Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask – Best Hydrating Mask
Probably the one product I was most excited to try of the selection I was sent. I have been told about how amazing this mask is many a time over the years. It’s considered to be the holy grail of hydrating masks. Which at close to £100 for a tube you would hope it’s pretty darn good… and I can happily say it REALLY is. This will be much like my early days with the Dermalogica Micro Exfoliant, I will be using this like it’s pure gold and making it last as long as possible as this is truly a stunning mask.
bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder – Best Mineral Base Range
I really, really like bareMinerals as a range and there really isn’t a strong all round competitor out there for best mineral range in my opinion. Lately I’ve been most impressed by their new liquid mineral ranges – the new hydrating skin base and the foundation from last year have both been awesome. But for the powder – the Mineral Veil is actually just a lovely light finishing powder. So if (like me) maybe mineral powders don’t quite work for you as your skin is a little too dry, then this is a good option when combined with a liquid to give it that velvet ‘set’ finish.
Clinique Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector – Best for Dark Circles
Another one of my existing loves that I’m very happy to see in there. This has been a make-up bag staple for a couple of years for me as manages to be the best of both worlds of cosmetics and skincare. So it adds a sheer wash of brightening effect, lightly concealing darker circles but also hydrates so leaves skin refreshed and hydrated thanks to the metal tip applicator. Definite winner in my book.
Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Corrector – Best Age Spot Treatment
This is the only one of the bunch that I really can’t give a proper mini review to I’m afraid, purely because I don’t have Dark Spots to correct really! But if you have tried this, let me know what you think of it!
Having had a good browse through the other winners there are a few others that I think are very deserving of the In Style Best Buys 2015 title including.. Best Inexpensive Brush Range going to Real Techniques, totally deserved as is an amazing range. Best Cult Fragrance went to Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, a beautiful bottle and beautiful scent that I always take a moment to sniff when I pass it in store. Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax was given the ‘Best Bath Oil’ title and I swear by these for a truly relaxing bath, so totally get why these are in there. Seche Vite got best top coat – no arguments here. I’ve lost count how many bottles I’ve gone through now. Bed Head Superstar Queen for a Day got the award for Best Volumiser – another I swear by. Lastly, Clarins Blue Orchid Oil got the Best Facial Oil – I’ve raved about this one time and time again. Love it.
I do love seeing awards where there are products I actually agree with are winning!
