I actually find it quite odd that fragrance is such a big thing at Christmas in terms of gifting, with gift sets lining the aisles of Boots and all sorts of deals and offers on. I guess at the end of the day it’s such a huge mark up on the cost to make that it’s a good thing for the companies in terms of being a money spinner…but that’s a bit cynical of me. The reason I think it’s odd is that fragrance and perfume is such a personal, subjective thing – one person will love a fragrance and another think it smells like burnt toast mixed with last week’s gym kit… so you have to be pretty close to the person you’re buying for to either know what their actual choices would be or what their general taste in fragrance is.
So with that in mind, I’ve got five fragrances here that I feel are on the ‘safe’ territory – they’re ones that have fairly clean notes and fresh scents and aren’t over powering so will suit a wider range of fragrance tastes than the stronger scent options.
Lacoste Eau De Lacoste* (£45 from Debenhams): A very fresh and ‘clean’ smelling scent – like fresh washed cotton sheets. Probably my favourite of the bunch here – just simply a nice, clean smelling perfume. For that ‘my natural scent is like clean cotton’ sort of feel.
Huge Boss Jour Pour Femme* (£28 from Escentual) The one fronted by Gwyneth Paltrow – Hugo Boss is always the brand I’d turn to for ‘if in doubt’ perfume gifts. It’s one that I know has a range of ‘crowd pleaser’ scents and this is the latest in the line. The lighter version (theres also a Nuit version). This one has a mix of white flowers and citrus – with Grapefruit Flower and Lime Accord as top notes (very fresh). Honeysuckle, Lilly of the Valley and Freesia Heart Notes and Creamy Amber and White Birch as base notes. Results in something quite citrus and fresh, but with a touch of powdery flowers to it too.
Especially Escada Elixir* (£28.90 from Escentual) This is the most intense of the bunch and the ‘bravest’ choice – it’s more of an evening scent with lots of rose in there. So one for anyone who you think might like a floral scent that’s quite classic. Top notes keep it a bit fresher though with Pear in there. Turkish rose, ylang-ylang, prune and plum at the heart and base notes of Patchouli, musk, amber and vanilla. If you think this might be a bit too intense, there’s always the fresher original Especially Escada fragrance which has similar but lighter variations on the same fragrance.
Lacoste Touch of Pink* (£24.99 from Boots): I love this one and was actually given it for Christmas a few years ago myself. Not one I wear all the time but do love that it’s an easy one to wear – very fresh with lots of blood orange scent coming through. A good one (with the pink bottle and everything) for a true girly-girl, maybe a teenage sister or niece… the top notes are orange, peach and cardamom, mid notes or carrot seeds (!?) jasmine and violet leaf, with final base notes of sandalwood, musk and vanilla. Just writing about it now makes me want to dig out the bottle and wear it.
DKNY Be Delicious Skin* (£38 from Boots): I mentioned how I went over to Amsterdam for the launch of this innovative member of the DKNY Be Delicious family (you can read about the trip HERE or my interview with Marloes Horst, the face of the campaign HERE). I’ve been a long term fan of the DKNY Be Delicious fragrances ever since I bought myself a duo of the original and the pink version at the airport when off on holiday a few years ago. There’s something just so nice about the scent of apple that I can’t get enough of. This new version has the same familiar apple based scent, with the added bonus of skin-goodness in the perfume too, so when you spray all over your skin you will feel more hydrated and radiant. There’s not many fragrances out there that you can safely spray all over without smelling like you just bathed in perfume, but as this is a quite a light one a spritz all over can work and make the scent last longer. Another great, fresh fragrance that is definitely a ‘safe’ choice for a gift as apple is quite a universal fragrance.
Hope that helps for your last moment present buying dilemmas!
