Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayon

The sudden onset of Summer has me craving more colour than normal in my beauty routine so it seemed like a good time as any to reach for my go-to colour product, eye liner. If you’re a tad wary of colour then I really recommend eyeliner as a nice easy way to add a bit of colour into your safe and neutral look. Either in the place of liquid liner on the upper lid, or on the inner waterline to add a little bit of colour. Or even multiple colours if you fancy it. Why not, there are no rules!

Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner
Marc Jacobs has two collections for eye liner – both in the highliner family – but in a matte and a shimmer version. This post is all about the matte shades as they’re the newest launch. I have a second post in the works for the shimmer shades too. So if you prefer your liner with a bit of sheen then keep your eyes open for the next post. But if you fancy a bit of pure, matte colour – then these are for you.

The shades in the Marc Jacobs Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayon collection are:

  • (Earth)quake – Dark brown, cool toned
  • (Brown)ie – Rich brown, warm toned
  • (Iron)y – Almost black
  • Over(night) – Deep navy
  • (Grape)vine – Rich purple
  • Fine(wine) – Rich cherry red
  • Out of the blue – Bright blue
  • Whirl(pool) – Bright greeny-turquoise(ish)
  • (Pop)ular – Hot pink
  • Mist me? – Lilac
  • Deja blue – Baby blue
  • Pink of me – Baby pink

A great range of colours from the ‘usual’ black/brown shades, to pretty pastels shades and brighter or quirky shades like rich red. The lilac shades – Mist me? – really reminds me of one of my first forays into make-up when I was a teenager at school and wasn’t allowed into the canteen until I removed my lilac eyeliner…  years might have past, but I’ll still go for some lilac eye liner any day.

The other stand out for summer of me is the bright blue – Out of the blue – a bold shade that is one of those colours I always get drawn to for some reason. A bright blue liner will always get me all heart-eyes emoji. Especially if it’s matte.

I think matte shades in general is the more modern way to wear colour. As much as I love a shimmer shade, there’s something cooler about a matte colour. Especially for a bold colour over a neutral. These are all silky smooth with solid staying power – they go on so smooth, with great pigment – so no lacking in colour as you apply.

I love the unique colour selection. It’s nice to see a high-end brand do some more experimental stuff. I feel like I’ve never seen a cherry red or lilac from a brand like Marc Jacobs! And it definitely is a modern way to integrate colour into your look! Been hearing GREAT things about these, I want to try them out for myself for sure!
