Smashbox Halo Foundation Review

When I think Smashbox, my first thought it always primers – they’re the folks behind one of my all time favourites (their hydrating one) along with primers for pretty much every step of the make-up process – including an under-eye primer that’s really great too. But of course, any brand who is good at primers is pretty much guaranteed to be ace at foundation too – right?! They’re both in the same ‘flawless skin’ category and go hand in hand.. so a fair assumption to make. This meant I was very excited to try the new Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation* from the brand – and handily, post-holiday I had a paler and a slightly darker shade to test – that helped blend with my now-multiple freckles. So I gave shade 3 a go…

Firstly, what does this ‘HD’ foundation promise? It claims that you can ‘Get a totally even, radiant finish that feels fresh and alive. Each pigment is encapsulated in a translucent gel to create that coveted, natural, lit-from-within glow.’ The foundation is oil free and light to medium coverage – which I would agree with.

The foundation comes out in a fairly small blob, and when you put a brush/finger in it, it immediately feels like an extremely lightweight gel. This isn’t a case of a little going a long way, as I found to cover my face I needed 3-4 pumps of product. But it’s worth noting that I was using a foundation brush to apply – which isn’t my favourite way, I much prefer a buffing brush. My skin is very uneven at the moment with some areas of redness (chin, cheeks, nose) and loads more freckles than usual (all over cheeks, forehead). So the lighter covered doesn’t tend to make the skin totally flawless in this case, more of a general evening out. In hindsight, I think the shade 3 is that little bit too yellow toned for my skin – whilst the shade does work for my freckles, the natural pinkness in my skin (emphasised by time in the sun) doesn’t necessarily work. But regardless of colour match, I can still chatter on about the texture and quality etc.

My first thought is that it’s nice to have found a foundation that’s promising HD results, with light coverage (one to bear in mind for when the weather gets warmer?) – personally I like light to medium coverage, preferring this to anything heavier which I find to be uncomfortable or even ageing in some cases. So texture wise, this definitely feels light and very fresh to apply.

Finish wise, it nails the whole ‘natural glow/not greasy’ middle ground and I don’t find that skin gets shiny over the day. I’ve been giving it the ‘work day test’ (also know as wearing it to a full day in the office, bookended by tube/bus travel) and it holds up well until around 3/4pm where I found in areas like the sides of the nose, between the brows and chin need a bit of a buff/touch up.

The other major selling point of this foundation is that it photographs really well – even though it does contain SPF 15. I found that under bright lights, it just looks natural and radiant rather than bright or washing me out. It’s a really nice foundation, I’m going to have a play with blending shade 3 and shade 1 as I have a bottle of each to see how that works as a colour match for me as 1 is more of a pinky base than a yellowy one. It’s worth popping to a counter to get matched.

I like the way it looks on your skin but I think for the price I would prefer longer lasting coverage.

Thank you, I do love a bright lip. Just struggle with it day to day as rubbish at touching up regularly enough for it not to look rubbish!
